Please. No Flaming.

thank you for your vote!

hell yeah open up those budsites... if your growing a thick strain and using hid's yes if not leave them alone. Never mess with fan leaves early in the plants life let them fall off naturally peace

i was taught while growing inside under hps lights to pluck a few fans every few days starting from the bottom up leaving the top 1/3 pretty much alone

the basis for that was that inside the plants are being provided with way way way more light than whats being provided by the sun so opening up the girls encourages better airflow (for less chance of mold) as well as help expedite the trim process.

outdoors the leaves are left alone!

that said i understand the argument for leaving things alone, too, as the leaves ARE the solar panels... so i try not to take off too many. or maybe i am just lazy.

alls i know are there are lots of right ways and lots of wrong ways.

curious to see how the thread progresses

I remove them from the dominate cola(s) to stop it from climbing higher.

so, if growing bushes, yes.

Personally i try not to remove any fan leaves, rather prune and train the plants for maximum light penetration through the canopy in veg...I do loose some healthy fan leaves in this process of pruning. Once in flower I dont touch them as overall plant structure has been mostly achieved and any stress i try to avoid

Tuck them and make them share. How would you like it if someone ripped off your arms and said now make a baby? :joint:

Yea I'm all about the pruning early and shaping to keep the plants from needing any leaf removal later. Tuck any leaves that you feel are taking more than their fair share...
Also, the leaves are not just the solar panels, they are also nutrient storage areas, and transfer nutrients to the budsites closest to the leaves in question. When you remove a fan leaf, the budsite growing out of that node is going to suffer as far as nutrient uptake. Hopefully the plant will be able to make up for it by taking nutrients from other close-by leaves and through the roots.
Terms to look into:
xylem & phloem, nutrient translocation

Here's a link to a post that I made in another thread that I think applies

I prune some of the fan leaves away if they are scrunched up and touching other leaves/branches. I'm hoping this will avoid PM. Otherwise, I would just prune the lower branches.

me blunt is like, wicked yo!! owight
i remove my leaves about 2-3 weeks b4 final chop. i wanted a true result and needed a control group so out of 16 plants i only took the fan leaves coming from the main stem off of 8 of the plants.

i have to say there was a very noticeable result, the buds did get noticeably bigger and stickier on the trimmed plants. it made sense to me that the leaves that were left near teh bud sites would make energy for those/each individual bud site.

the bud sites at the bottom got nice and plump as well, i am happy to say the people i gave them too to try actually found them to be a nice quality

This was my first grow ever. And, at someone else's advice, I removed ALL the fan leaves just as buds were beginning to show. I will NEVER do this agian!!! It was like the entire plant went into a shock (and, probably did)!! The buds quit growing... there were no more new buds for a long time... the once beautiful girl looked like $hit!!! She acted as if she were a man who was trying to impregnate a woman; and just before he blew his load, someone took a pair of pruning shears and lopped off his nut sack!!! :yoinks: Fellas (of which I am one), let that sit and marinate in your brain for a moment!! :jawdrop:

In the future, if I have some that I can't tuck away (fan leaves... not my nut sack ), I may clip them... as long as it can be done long before flowering. Otherwise, I'm gonna just let nature take its course!!!

in the early weeks of flower, if they form a solid canopy over some of the midbuds and can not be tucked out of the way, i will pick off a few select leaves.
during the later weeks i pull them off as they yellow up

I vote no on the removing of healthy fan leaves. Only time I touch the fan leaves is to trim a burnt or dead leaf tip or dead leaf. The dead leaves can cause mold problems if humidity levels are high. If you find a fan leaf blocking direct light from a bud site, tuck the leave under. Dont cut it off..10TT

At the finial 4-6 weeks I remove fan leaves and any branches on the inside of the plant to cut down on mold problems not to increase bud size. So I voted yes but not sure if its the reason you were after.

Nothing is more powerfull, nor more capable of producing the full spectrum of psychoactive and depressive compounds in cannabis then the SUN.

Have you ever heard of farmers trimming leaves of crops?

THC production is MAXIMUM at night, when their is no sun. Why would letting more sun get to the buds increase THC production then? it wouldnt.

Infact as far as i know (please correct me if im wrong) the specific rays of light from an HPS or the SUN actually break down THC content... the fact the carb producing fan leaves ON the bud would be charging hard and fueling the buds their attached to would be why people see bigger buds when their left in the light hotspots.

Hi Guys,
When I train, during veg, many fans are removed and then...up to two weeks into bloom I'll remove fans on the inside of the plant. Promotes ventilation and exposes lower areas to full light. Done it both ways and this does better for me.

PS: This takes time...so veg is extended. Not a problem with my schedule.
