I don't know dude. I've knocked on the wall before and asked a dude to turn his shit down. I was in my boxers trying to sleep and it was freezing out. It's better than a confrontation. Perhaps "medium" is not an option in your apartment if the walls are really thin.

lmao, I would rather him knock on my door. Him and his girlfriend don't work, and I am 100% sure I smelled crack smoke coming from their windows before.

An old apartment I lived at, you could literally hear WHISPERS if you were standing in the hallway or even just walking by the apartments. The Front doors and walls were EXTREMELY thin.
Some places offer no good sound protection. It's not your fault, its a rental.
But at the same time, I feel for this guy too. I love Metallica as well, but if I'm trying to sleep to get up for work in the morning, I can get pretty pissed too no matter what the noise is. I'm up at 4:30am for work every morning, so I go to bed early.

I've always been cool and nice to neighbors, but if they know I go to bed early and intentionally are loud and shit that's messed up.

I had some MMA-type macho cocksucker punching the other side of one of my walls once when my girl and I were trying to sleep. I went over there and just threw up my hands and looked at my neighbor who was letting it go on like, "what the fuck man?" And there was no apology or anything. Just took his MMA gloves off and looked at me like I was the idiot for wanting him to stop acting like a god damned caveman.
Then I couldn't sleep (no pot!) like 1 hr later, so went into my den to check out ICmag, which was near my front door. They were outside drunken jib-jabbing and all and I heard him talking to one of my other neighbors, who I'm cool with, saying, "yea this asshole came over and told me to stop punching the walls, I about beat his fuckin ass." My neighbor out there was like, (about me) "man, that's one of the chillest dudes I know, what's the deal?"
He never gave me any indication he wanted to fight, and if he did, he would have soon been looking at the business end of my 12-gauge. I don't start fights, but I will surely defend myself. I'm not getting my ass kicked...

Was listening to Metallica at a medium level, not loud. Next thing I know I have some idiot pounding on the shared wall (apartment).
Should I go over there and kick his face in for being rude? Ignore? lol. Some people never amaze me.
its called respect little boy! you share a wall with a neighbor in an apartment. bass in omnidirectional and you cant tell how far it travels.
what never seems to amaze me is the little immature dickholes who think they are in the right for having loud music!

I would simply go over knock on his door in a polite way and ask him if he has a problem.....if he says yes say Ill try my best to keep quiet. Go back to your apartment and turn up your stereo loud as possible and start banging on his wall. I personally had a loud neighbor above me I went out to my back porch and cranked off two rounds with my 12 ga never made a peep again peace and good luck
