Drying in a 12/12 cab?

I have read that the initial days of drying are best done in darkness. What is the harm if it is dried in the same cab as a younger plant in 12/12?

I am about to chop a VERY STINKY LR#2, while a different plant still has a few more weeks to go. I absolutely need the cab's fan/filter to control the LR2's smell for the first few days of drying, but I don't want to screw up the other plant by plunging it into 24/0 darkness for any length of time.

What is the reason for drying in darkness? Is there any problem with me drying them in the same cab as a 12/12 400w HPS? I could put together a makeshift lean-to, which would shade the drying buds from direct light. Am I overthinking this or should I be geniunely concerned about the quality of the harvest?

I see no problem and have thought about trying it myself so I could hang the plants to dry instead of putting them on the rack. That little lean to sounds like a good idea. I would keep the buds as far any from the light as possible and at least 6 inches off the floor. 6 inches is the for the food industry to prevent contamination. I read the sign yesterday.

You'll have to keep a closer eye on the buds. They could dry in a matter of hours. My buds have been drying in the dresser for 3 days and are getting to the point I need to put them in jars. The buds are in the dark 24/7 and protected from dust and cat hair.

Bad idea. I hear you on the smell problem though. You do not want your drying girls to get ANY light. This will degrade the quality of your harvest. Also the temps in your cabinet will most likely lead to your crop drying out too fast, making your smoke harsh.

The longer you can dry, with the least amount of light pollution (while still avoiding mold) will give you the best tasting herb possible (10 days is great) If you MUST dry in your cab while growing, definitely use your lean to and try to keep temps DOWN.
Good luck!

could you just hang it above your lights? like run a fishing line across your cab/ closet so the bud hangs a few inches above your reflector? depends if you have the vertical space i guess. good luck

well i agree that slow dry is the best however I have tried 2 diffirent methods of drying quickly and both work fine with a long slow cure afterwards. The first is using a food dehydrator . There is a thread on this forum from a grower of 15 yrs or longer who discusses this and just how effective its is. I currently are using meds that were dried in 30 C dehydrator and cured for 3 months and they are very nice buds. The second is to hang a stringline up at the top corner of your room ( furthest area from light and heat and clip some clothes pegs on it. Place the lowryders into a thick paper bag and loosely fold the top and clip it to the stringline for 2 to 3 days. checking daily to see that its not too dry. Then I place them into a glass jar and commence curing and daily breathing for a few weeks checking that its not too moist . If it does show signs hang it back in the room for another 12 hrs - 24 hrs. This works fine for those emergency situations where keeping stealth outweights all other considerations.
