Hello all,

I'm just curious how long you guys out there veg for in relation to your end yield. I used to do a 4kw DWC grow and I was getting around 1.25lb/1kw. A friend said that if I vegged for a little longer I would get much higher than that. What I did was veg for 4 weeks under a 400w MH, then when I transplanted them into the big DWC beds under 1000w's, I immediately flipped them to 12/12. My friend says that I should veg them for a week or two under the 1000w's before flipping to 12/12. I like the idea of flipping them immediately, because it's a 10 week finishing plant and I like being able to get nearly 5 harvests per year. If I veg them for a few weeks longer I can only get 4 harvests or so, but I suppose it might be worth it if the yield increases that much.

What do you guys think?

Well, yes, you can probably get more....however, the question is: Will you get 20% more--the difference between 4 and 5 harvests a year? Do you have enough room in your space to let the plants get larger?

From my experiences, minus space issues, bigger plant= bigger yield. Assuming you have the room for a more established and sizable root system in your medium container, you will be happier with one less harvest and more buds on bigger plants throughout the year. Not all mat agree but it works in my favor. Good luck!

listen to your friend.:D
30 days from clone thru pre-veg under 600w.
30-60 days under multiple 1ks.

dont post imaginary y*elds...
should be min 1 grocery bag of fruit per plant:)

to get used to vegging under 1k's, would only go for 2 weeks for 1st time. can easily become overgrown. nearly daily training required.

18/6 too much stretch.
24/0-20-4. stockier. mh light.

enjoy your garden!

I think I would look at it like this,
If the 4 yields MORE in less time compared to the 5.

Doubt it...

BUT

what would the cost differences be between running those 1k's on a veg cycle compared to 12/12 as well. Not sure how many 1k's we are talking here BUT 12/12 versus 18/6 or 24/0 is pretty huge in my head.

I would focus on MORE cycles versus less.

360/60=6
360/90=4

20/4 veg under 1k=
20*30=600 kwh/mo

18/6 veg under 1k=
18*30=540 kwh

12/12 for 30 days=
12*30=360 kwh/mo

if dont have separate 1k veg area, still viable to run 30 days of 1k for 20/4. or, wait until the roots come out of the bottom of a 5 gal bucket, like clone in 4" container. that is when roots colonize entire bucket. that is when can get 1+ full pic-nic baskets of fruit per plant...

even w/ 1 400w & 1 1000w, can still take 30 extra days, & grow 4-6 very large plants, that could easily double their #'s in fruit...

*edit*
veg doesnt begin under 1k's until plant is @ least 8" tall + wide & has fully colonized 6" container.

enjoy your garden!

For me, putting large mature clones into my system, then vegging them under the big lights for two weeks is key to the kind of harvest I want. Four crops per year is fine, I just set up a second room so that I get 7-8 crops per year on a slow old man cycle.
