600w ballast dimmable to 400w - safe to use 400w bulb?

So they don't make any 600w MH bulbs, but I need to veg a little with my 600. I am able to dim to 75% which is 450w. Normally this is a stupid question, because you should always match bulb and ballast watts, but its only 50w off supposedly. Could this work? Would you try it?

No do not do it.

I have a lumatek dimmable digital ballast and the instruction insert that came with it says

A 400W halide lamp should not be used in a 600w ballast

I accidentally put a 1k bulb in a 600 ballast the other day and fired her up. Burned fine for a day and then there was a LOUD ASS *POP* and the lights went out. Figured out what was going on and got a new bulb. No harm done, but it was scary as hell and shouldn't ever be done. Who knows what could go down. Why risk it for some MH? When you can veg great under HPS. I vegged my entire crop under HPS and there's no problem.
