I have a 8" Max Fan that I would like to put on a solid state speed controller. Just checking to make sure that this is ok and will not harm the fan.

im not sure what a solid state speed controller is but i tried using a rheostat with a 8" maxfan and it couldnt adjust it even minimally slower without getting that buzzing sound that signals its bad for the fan. great fan though....

Hi Albireo,
Can't address your specific issue...but I put a solid state speed control on a 1000cfm ventilation fan. I'm able to control it from full on to about 1/3 speed. Won't go way slow but I think that's common with controllers. Hope that helped some...

whats a solid state controller? I tried using a dimmer on my can max and it makes the unhappy hum.

It's totally electronic...not using a rheostat. Mine is a sealed block with everything internal with just the dial controller and wires coming out.

xcrispi thats the same controller i have my 14 inch max fan plugged into. Anytime i have it on anything other than 'Full' it sounds like it is going to explode. Loud hum and a grating noise. It works pretty well on another ten inch max i have. I think some are just not meant to be dimmed maybe?

Email from CF Group (Canfan) regarding the control of their Max fans:
You can control the fan, but only use a motor or speed control and not a light dimmer.

thanks dongle. are they referring to the type of controller that is linked in xcrispi's above post?
I thought that was a 'speed control' and it definitely does not sound good with the 14 incher!

I emailed Can Fan the same question. The answer they gave we was just a plug for there new controler, that I can't find any information about. Below is there answer.

Question

What type of speed controler do you recomend for your fans (ex: Solid State)? I am looking to buy speed controlers that do not make the fans HUM loudly. I own a Max Fan 8".

Answer

Hello,

Attached is a fan controller made for the 12” max fan, yet works on all 120v fans with NO MOTOR HUM!

This is an amazing product that we at CFG are very excited to have released. The Can-Trol provides a smooth sinusoidal wave entering the fan so that the fan stays quiet even when turned down to the slowest speed. The speed settings on the Can-Trol range from 0 to 120% in 1% increments. This IS the motor control to get to ensure flawless operation.

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to post something that I've observed using an electronic speed controller on a house ventilation fan. When first turning it on, I go to full speed and then back off to the lower speed that I want.

If I turn it on and immediately go to a very slow setting...then it doesn't seem to have enough juice to get the fan started.

Once started, I don't get any hum at the low settings and it can run all day without overheating. Perhaps others have had problems by not getting the fan started first.
