What's new

I'm an idiot... dying babies

So I think I should have flushed my coco before I planted my 15 seeds...

I have
6 Timewarp x White Widow

4 Bubble Hash (Redwood Seed Co)

4 Burmese (Nirvana?)

All in coco

Well most of the little ones are showing burnt leaves, both coteyldon and the next set.

Is there any way I can save them? They are about 1 week old.

if u think they'll withstand having the water put through them without getting washed away, theres no reason not to go ahead and flush now... simply run pH adjusted water (5.8) through the pots until the stuff coming out of the bottom is the same EC as the stuff going in ;)

p.s I think I also just killed my babies, but for entirely different reasons... I let mine stretch too much then they got damping and fell over :(

some of mine fell over too. :( dying babies makes me sad

I'm going to pack the coco down a bit and put a layer of paper towel on top with a hole cut out for the plant.
Then ill run pH'ed water through and hope they aren't already dead.

Stop using that shitty coco.
Go get some good coco, CAREFULLY take the whole coco ball outta it's container and GENTLY knock off all the shit coco until the roots are exposed, then GENTLY transplant.
Stop using that shitty coco!

That's the same kind of coco I've just started using.

I don't have that happening though. I hope it doesn't.

Are you feeding them at all? I think you might want to let it dry out and then water well with a light feed and include some calmag. I used calmag only solution to water my seedlings with and didn't feed (other than the calmag) for two weeks and they are fine.

P.S. why is this coco shitty?

It's shitty because it's not intended for growing plants, it's to line animal cages with. Not much quality control goes into processing it, and why should it, it's only for animals to shit/piss on and bugs to live in.
Can it be made to work? Sure. But make no mistake, it's shitty coco.

I still use seed starting soil mixed with ewc for seedlings. i wait till they have a good root system then transplant to coco

Yea...rather get coco whose primary purpose is for your garden. Coco comes from coconut trees that mostly are grown in plantations near the sea. So you need to get a product that has been pre-washed to get the excess salt and other dodgy elements out.

also, with pre-washed coco, you'll find you don't have to supplement with Cal Mag to compensate for the high salt content (too much salt will cause a nut lock out).

Awesome, thanks for the help guys. The seedlings that survived have been transplanted into soil until I can get some decent coco.

This "shitty" coco is rocking my socks off. Way better than soil. You just gotta rinse the salts out with a calmag solution. Not the most difficult thing I've ever done :)

Transplanting here and there without waiting for them to be rootbound is more harmful imo.

Rinsing is 110% necessary. I rinsed before and had great results with this stuff.

I don't see how them being rootbound has any bearing on when to transplant them.

never sprout in coco, the cation exchage for cal, mag, pot is just to wierd for the first week of life unless your coco is rinsed perfect and pre treated with cal mag n ph adjusted water, next run use jiffy pots and then put theese in the coco after the seedling is strong.

for your problem since its the first week i wouldnt worry, same thing happened to me and scared the shit out of me, when i saw my coteyldons going yellow on day 2 n 3, i was like ''are u fuking kidding me'', i mean really how big of a mess up do u gotta make to have coteyldons showing deficency? ive only grown in soil before and from the first time from seed to harvest never had any problems, so i feed them a light floranova bloom(use a food with calmag) and they recovered and went on to kick ass. coco is tricky at first, look aorund the forum some people have figured out how to sprout in coco with perfect sucess, im sticking to jiffy pots on my next run.

Rootbound may be too harsh of a term for what I mean to say.

Rootwound maybe...I don't like seeing a waste of space (coco or soil). If my roots are well wrapped inside the vessel the next vessel fills more evenly and fully and that translates to a better yeild.

You'll see.. try it. I'm not lying :)
