Thanks for the links V and Pango, heard this on the radio this morning, nice to see a bit of sense reported in the media, some interesting comments from the public on the BBC site as well, although still a few ignorant views most people seem to be a bit more on the ball!

I just wish we could get away from this generic use of the word 'Skunk' !!

I don't know anything about our new Home Sec. , Alan Johnson.

I assume he will just spout the party line :

"Think of the children !" ,

"Our first duty is to protect the public"

In fact, wring his hands about issues caused by criminalization, then promise to be "tough on crime".

Are there any pro-weed MPs in the Commons at all?

I think more would be achieved by having one more newspapers taking a pro-weed stance (I'm looking at you, Daily Mail). The politicos seem to act purely in response to newspaper headlines.

As usual the politicians are rolling out the tub-thumping anti drugs messages pre-election. I note that the Tories are using the hackneyed "let's keep our children off drugs" line as a major feature of their pre-campaign, campaign. So more reactionary, ill-informed nonsense to look forward to, no doubt.

I do find it slightly baffling that people are confused by Governments' (of any colour) illogical drugs policies. Whatever they say, the policies have little or nothing to do with logic, harm reduction, reducing criminality etc. Drugs policy is about getting easy votes from people who know little and care less. Rather than attacking politicians (or as well as) for their lack of reasonable arguments, I suspect it would be more productive to call them out on their craven greed for votes at any cost (to anyone but themselves), let's say it straight out:

"Your cannabis policies are about getting votes and have little or nothing to do with harm reduction."

Maybe rubbing their faces in their own (forgive me) bullshit would shame them into being more responsible and tolerant?

Thing is, every time the govt has commissioned a study into cannabis the report said the same - it's not harmful, less so than alcohol and tobacco. It's never made a difference though. I just can't see cannabis changing in legal status in the UK in the next decade as the tories are probably gonna get in and those assholes will never slacken the ganja laws. For example, anyone remember Anne Widdicome and her tirades about the evils of Cannabis?

To quote Vivian Westwood, "The government gives us Nationalistic Idolatry, Non-Stop Distraction and Organised Lying" Lets be honest, I dont think that a UK government is going to change the laws on Cannabis. We can only expect more oppression, more legislation, more control. I smoked pot since the early seventies, & the sentencing for a roach end, the stop & search, & the families & homes broken up by heavy handed drug squad officers seems to be a lot worse then than now. I run a successful bussiness, have a loving wife & family, & choose to have a puff on a spliff or a drink if I get the time. I have accepted the fact that what I do is illegal, but I will never accept the fact that I am wrong. To this end I grow a few plants, I have escaped the world of drug dealers & criminals & class A's, & get on with my life. In the end it dont matter what they say. Just grow some blow, its free & not so bad, really.
Hats off to Proff Nutt, but those who pay the piper calls the tune.

Our lovely unelected prime minister was quoted as saying that cannabis was lethal so of course his cronies are al up in arms about this statement being contradicted. Alcohol and Tobacco kill millions of people all around the world every year but not one person has been killed soley by cannabis. The government does not like being told they are wrong and wrong they are.

When is this country even going to allow medicinal use of this useful plant when its rulers hold the misguided belief that cannabis is lethal among other things?

I am in a way happy the guy got sacked for telling the truth as now the truth will be spread and this issue will, hopefully, be debated.

yeah there is quite good coverage of his post-sacking statements

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/default.stm

he makes some very good and coherant arguments - hopefully this upgrading issue will come back to bite Brown in the arse.

at this moment when USA seems sympathetic to cannabis we really want people in UK to reconsider their opinions.
