SoG will deffinately allow you the most plants under one light but doesn't neccesarily mean you'll get the most yield.
a 3' x 3' floorprint is the smallest one should go with when using a 600w HPS...
600w/9 square feet = 66.66w per square foot
90,000 lumens/9 square feet = 10,000 lumens per square foot.
If using 6" square containers you could fit up to 25-36 plants or 4 plants per square foot (that's if going SoG route).
I wouldn't attempt trees with a 600w HPS as a 600w HID can only penetrate about 3' down into the canopy and of course you could epext some popcorn at the bottom.
SCRoG I would say 2-4 plants depending on how long you want to veg.
Are you going to be growing in soil/soiless or hydro?

16,20 or 25 per square metre depending on strain characteristics,expect or hope for a yield of 500gramm +/-
36 if you trim em so they form one main top bud but go for 16, less work and easier to handle until you develop skills with experience.

good info head, i have a 1000 and the balancing act between area and density is always an issue, i like to try and keep the light within 16 in

I suggest you learn for yourself how to figure number of lights, instead of asking people to think for you.
It's pretty simple, if you give enough information to answer the question you really want answered. Your original question lacks information enough for a proper answer, so instead you were given the tools to figure it out for yourself.
You could grow one big plant under a 600w light, or you could grow 200 tiny ones...
By 'forget all the jargon" do you mean you do not want to learn how to figure it out, you want someone to provide you a stock answer? If that's what you want, then you need at least bother learning enough to ask proper questions.
I would run 10 plants under 2 lights... prolly 2 1k lights... but that's all personal preference and goal dependent...

Vegged for 4 weeks? They will be too tall for a 600w light after a couple weeks of 12/12, you need to flip them today and prune them down, and again in two weeks so they finish at 3' tall or less. Why the hell did you veg so long? 2 weeks is usualy more than enough.
