general seed popping behavior

I have had alot of problems with seeds that crack, and put out that first
little taproot, go a little more, and then just stop, alot of time before
it's gets (it being the little primordial part in the seed) out of the
shell. Is this genetic? it currently is happening after I stick the popped
seed into the dirt

sounds like they may be too wet. does this happen with multiple strains or just one?

Too wet or "hot" soil come to mind. What are you growing in? How much water?

sounds ike you have wrong conditions, easiest way to do it is make sure you use a clean brand new zip lock and 100% white paper towel, fold up the paper towel lik 12-15 times up one side with seeds in the middle and then fold that up around the seed area.

Then drip the best cleanest water over the towel until almost every dry spot is gone, the rest of the dry spots will get wet as the water seeps around.

Do not super-saturate the towel.

put the wad in the ziplock and check every few days but keep everything super clean do not touch it with dirty hands, if you still have problems use colloidal silver water instead of regular water.

Let them get about an inch long and then take them out of the paper and plant them in whatever medium you want.

This way I get 100% successful starts on even old ass seeds that werent properly stored.

too deep really messes with my seed popping ability. i threw 18 seeds into a glass of water that i let sit out for a day to offgas any CL, i left the seeds in the water for a matter of days, totally forgot about them, came back to all of them taprooted and ready to go. i was pleased i skipped the paper towel step and proceeded to sew them into 3.5 inch square pots. i planted 17 of them at the same depth i usually sew them at, 1cm, no deeper. And ONE of them more than an inch deep, approximately just over twice as deep as the other ones. IT STILL hasnt breached the surface and i think it never will. the other 17 are flourishing, and it IRKS me. I think if the sun was beaming down on the seed over an inch deep it would sense it and pop, but not with a bunch of high powered CFLs, theyve nothing on the sun.

perhaps too wet/too deep?

Why is everyone saying too wet? It sounds like it's too dry to me... I have had this problem when the shell dries out and the embryo cannot pop it open. Wet shells seperate easier than dry ones. I've remoistened them and "birthed" them out of their coats with a pair of tweezers and a pin... very very carefully!

Some strains are just tough skinned bastards however.

So wet shells don't seperate as easily as dry ones in your experience? I wonder if the toilets flush the opposite direction there? :D

Seriously though, I've had to "surgically" remove the little hats off my sprouts...Maybe I didn't let'em soak long enough. I planted them once I saw them cracked and the tap starting to push out.

I've read since that I should soak longer, some say till there's a 1" tail.

How many others have had to help birth their sprouts?

I was sproutin' some costly beans, I felt like Dr. Kildare working on 'em.

All worked out well, my 1st grow from seed...

6 Swiss Bliss, all sprouted, 3 females. Caterfuckingpillars ate the buds of two, so I harvested 1, yeilded about 4z.

6 Jack Herer, all sprouted, 5 females, so far I've chopped 4 and have about 20z of the best weed I've ever smoked, period.

I'd like to hear more input on popping seeds....

Grow on, Respect

I've had to remove the shell before. It's weird because I always pop 4 at a time and its only ever one or two that need help.

I've also planted too deep. I waited for a few days after potting them and noticed what looked like a root growing upwards from the pot. On investigation the plant had freed from its shell and grown quite normally......if it wasn't for the fact that it was upside down and buried in dirt!!!

Same with a friend of mine he potted too deep, we just dug em out and repotted....there fine now.

Gotta love weed...it obviously loves us!!

yeah, if there isnt enough heat/luminosity coming from above, im a stern believer that it can be planted too deep for the custom environment.. just think it's very important for new growers to heed these grow guides that mention 1 cm deep, or 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch type deal. it cant grow up if it doesnt know where the sun is...
