What's new

whats your fav national park?

Yellowstone. Not because of the Ken Burns documentary with John Muir etc. Longtime fan. Been there twice, and longing to visit. It is definitely a medicinal place, and I wish more people would take the opportunity to visit, but responsibility in numbers and respect applied within the park.

I can't think of a bad national park, but my faves would have to be:

1. Denali Nat'l Park. I spent 3 weeks there on a failed attempt to ascend Denali. Nearly got ate by the McKinley River. We managed to summit Mt. Brooks though.

2. Glacier Nat'l Park. One of the most beautiful places on earth. My favorite hike there is the grueling 20+ mile day hike from Logan Pass to Lake McDonald.

3. Yellowstone. Just because I deserve to be a tourist once in a while.

3. Tied with Yellowstone: Zion. The canyoneering is awesome.

Ahh, so many memories. I think I'll dig up my pictures and spend the evening reminiscing...

Death Vally for me. I was there for the 100 year bloom 4 years ago. Camped there for over a month. There was enough water in the basin at -282' below sea level to paddle my canoe. 1st time in over 40 years a boat had been in that "lake".

Glacier Park is my 2nd, but too many people for me. Always go in the off season, when the park is closed. You have it almost to yourself.

My favorite so far is Rocky Mountain National Park. I have never been to the ones I really want to visit though. Glaciers, North cascades, olympic, redwood, and yosimite are all on my near future list though. I am going to try to about take three months in the next few years to see them all. Split up though I will do like on month in Glacier and north cascades, Then one month in olymplic and redwood (I know they are far apart.). then one month in yosemite and kings canyon.

Grandcanyon was incredible, but the hiking was hardcore. I made it to the bottom with my dad when I was 10, and it was magical.

here is some rmnp again

great thread

JA: Beautiful pics. Is that wolf sitting by the side of the road?

My favorite park would be Kruger...I hope to make it to Yosemite one day.

A great scenic ride is the Beartooth Highway out of Red Lodge, Montana. Halfway up is a lookout and a view of the hellroaring plateau (great name), this takes you to Cooke City and one of the entrances to Yellowstone. Much better hiking and high country fishing around Cooke than in the park itself. Beartooth highway is open usually from May thru late Sept. Happy Trails!

My favorite is Angkor, Cambodia....listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

From UNESCO: Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. They include the famous Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations. UNESCO has set up a wide-ranging programme to safeguard this symbolic site and its surroundings.

Have been there a couple of times and plan to go again....this time
with my new toy (Canon 50D)!

only national park i have been to is the Great Smokies Nat'l Park here in east tenn/nc. incredibly pretty scenery, if you get off the roads & scenic overlooks. most visitors never get out of their cars, so if you park & hike a ways, you see it like God made it. this fall, some of my best fishing spots are closed due to aggressively panhandling black bears. there HAVE been a couple of attacks, at least one of them fatal, in the last couple of years. makes you wonder when a twig breaks behind you during a backcast while fishing... armedoldhippy
