Chopping time based on hairs...should I still wait?

Hi all,
I am kind of new here, and Im also not an experienced grower. Oh yeah, and Im not a native english speaker, so "excuse my french" if I dont write perfectly :)

I have an indica, thats now a little over 4 weeks (32 days if I remember right) into flowering.
I am just a little confused, knowing that indica flowering should usually take at least 6 weeks. About 65-70% of the pistils have turned brown, and probably it wont be long untill the rest of them do so too. I have read somewhere that the right harvesting time could be estimated based on the pistils, and that when about 80% of them are brown, its time to harvest. I know the most precise way to decide when to harvest, is based on the thricombs, but I dont have a magnifying glass yet...and I dont know if I will get one just yet.

Additionally I have been looking at this picture below:
When_To_Harvest.jpg

Based on those pistils it would be harvest time pretty much right now, but Im having doupts about it. The plant has just started swelling, and the leaves are now starting to turn yellow, although there is a lot of very dark green leaves left. The leaves got very healthy looking and dark green in colour, after I started providing the plant with extra CO2 (water, yeast, sugar mixed)

So should I stop thinking about the pistils? Is it possible to have such a quickly maturing indica, that it would be fully matured in 40 days? I may be able to get a pic later, if anybody wants...

Thanks all :)

40 days is not too soon for full maturity.. you dont need a a microscope to determine trichome color, the color of the trichome can be seen with the naked eye... Do not judge by the hairs, it is better to go by the length of time.. If your plant looks white, like snow fell on it, then it can be chopped, bcecause the most important thing is that you have plenty of white / cloudy trichomes.. if your trichomes still look clear, wait it out..

*note wait even a bit longer to get the amber trichomes, they are worth it

save yourself the eye strain & get a 30x loupe, go by what type of trichs your looking for. Have fun

Love that pic OldTom...nice little pictorial.....All tho i use a handheld microscope, that can be used in a pinch but still hard to predict timing of harvest.

Peace,

:yeahthats

sounds like a nice quick indica :woohoo:,,what is it ?

Well its SUPPOSED to be a lowryder (ordered from high supplies), but it is definatelly not that!!!! I cant accentuate it enough here...

It wasnt autoflowering, and it grew a meter tall. Most of the other seeds in the bag (or the plants that grew from them) were VERY different from each other. Some were autoflowering, some were not, some were big, some were short and skinny...And then there was one plant, that was somehow genetically screwed up. It grew kind of double leaves, and some of the nods were not growing in pairs. I mean you could have one fan leaf and nodule on the right at 10 cm height, and another on the left at 15cm height. It was very strange.
The plant I now have going is the biggest of them by far. Its very bushy, and very tall (for a lowryder). Humongous fan leaves...and it is definatelly indica, based on leaf type. So no complaints with this one :)

I am very disappointed with my order from high supplies, because not getting propper lowryders, all my autumn plans got f**ked. But on the other hand, they sent me a "bag of surprises".

Do a "popcorn" test. Cut a small bud off, remove all leaves, cut up bud, bake at 150ºF for 10 minutes, add leaves, bake additional 10 minutes. Smokes hot as hell but will accurately indicate the plant's high or stone.

judging by hair colour is the worst way to judge when cannabis is ready

some plants will still have some white hairs while some will have almost no airs left at all at full maturity

best to look at trichs or just smoke some and see if it is where you want it

Back in the day (20 years ago), when I knew little about growing, I used to go by the color of the hairs, harvesting when 3/4 or so turned color. Now that I've started looking at trichomes, I see that going by the hair color is very rough at best. I've had plants that were still pretty much all white and ready for harvest. And I've had plants where the hairs turned color long before they were ready.

I've come to the conclusion that hairs turning color and trichomes turning color are generally not related. I think in some strains, the two just happen to coincide, but in others they don't. Of course you can't tell which strain you have until you've grown it and checked the trichomes. You can get a jeweler's loupe or Radio Shack microscope for around $10, so why not make this relatively small investment and do it right?

And FWIW, I've NEVER had any plant finish in less than 8 weeks.
