What's new

Lurkers closet 'o' mystery

I am now a caregiver for my wife, so this is my first grow in quite awhile...
The Plant:
3 weeks old at this point
Bag seed - Unknown lineage , primarily indica ( I think...fat leaves, tight 'nodes)
What is known about the mother:
Whoever grew the mother plant needs a savage beating. Plant was harvested way too early. Very few trichs. Lots of seeds,
very few viable. The "cure" was laughable at best...the plant appeared a dark greenish/grey color. It wasn't a "mold" type grey, more of a
"cured in an easy-bake oven" look. Produced a headache when used
Bottom line: There was nothing appealing at all about the medicine, but the medicine had been grown by a hack. This is the only survivor of 10.

The Strategy:
I'm waiting for clones from the disp. down the block, so i figured i could get back in the groove of things with this 'til then. Will use specimen as a mom....take some clones, flower 'em and see what I get.

The Light:
I just switched to a 250W MH. During germination i used a ghetto lamp with 2 26W cfls. Will flower out under 400W HPS

The Method:
Hydro! I still had my old stuff, just needed to be cleaned. It is a tupperware container (2 gal), taped 'n' painted the the outsides of both pieces, cut 3 x 4" holes in the lid, glue an airstone to the bottom, run an airline out, and presto! perfect for small moms.

The Nutes:
Botanicare Pure blend pro grow (will also be using the pro flower w/ kabloom) Anyone else using Botanicare Pure Blends?
Starting tapwater 200 ppm / 7.4 1300 ppm / 6.4 ph after nutes.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated, or if theres anything i missed, let me know. I'll take more pics when something interesting happens.

update

update

Not really a whole bunch going on...plant is getting bigger (which is always nice), small ph issues, finally got a clone of purple kush, but I'm wondering how long this poor lil' plant sat in an aero-cloner. It showed nute defs, but had a wad of roots. After 4 1/2 days, the plant is starting to perk up, loose some of the reddish stem, and putting out a little new growth. I'm hoping that a root show will be coming on soon :)

Not a bunch to see, but here is the mystery guest:

Update

Update

6 days later. Roots are going nuts, but still having a spotty / dying leaf issue. Still researching this. Left ph at 6.4, dropped ppm to 550. Purple kush clone is finally rebounding.
Mystery plant is a shrub. Just starting to show pre-flowers, but nothing determinable yet. I'd like to take a clone, but nothing long enough yet. Is it ok to clone off of a flowering plant?
New pics

ETA: Thanks for stoppin' by, trichy!

You can take a clone from a flowering plant, yes. Although you will have much lower success rates, as the hormones in the plant aren't geared for new growth, once flowering. Not only does it have to focus growth on new root growth, but simultaneously revert from flowering to a vegetative state. But yes you can surely take a clone from a flowering plant. I wouldn't recommend it but it can be done, and I wouldn't do it more than 10-15 days into flower. And ya man them roots are really starting to do their thing aren't they. I got ya tagged up now so I'll check back in from time to time. Still trying to get out of lurker mode, ya know.

Thanks for the info and stoppin' by, Mr. Bill. I had remembered from OG that it wasn't recommended to clone a flowering plant, but didn't remember the "why" part, so that is helpful...I'll wait a lil' bit longer to take some clones. I just wish i'd get some pre-flowers so I know if this plant is a gal! And, yep, i know all about "lurker mode"...did lots of "ninja-research" at OG back in th' day. That site was like "the Congressional library of all things ganja related" back in the day.

my favorite part with my dwc is getting to check the roots daily. I too am thoroughly obsessed with the roots. So are them cuts from a flowering plant? And... Have you always given your rooting clones a dark period? Just curious. I've always kept my rooting clones under 24/0 is why I ask.

update an' clonin' time!

update an' clonin' time!

M'kay, 2 days since last update, and as Mr. Bill stated above, the roots have gone insane. I feel that i'm somewhat obsessed with the roots, but healthy roots make a healthy happy plant. As I said above, I had my plants at 6.4 ph and 1300 ppm (1100 nutes, 200 due to local h2o). After realizing that that amount was way too much, backed it down to 6.4 ph, 800 ppm. Plants are now growing strong like ox.

The mystery plant had 2 lower branches that were finally long enough to take as cuttings, so I busted out the cloning gear and got busy.
Heres how I propagate plizzants:
First of all, when it comes to soil, I have a lethal brown-thumb. For the life of me, I can't figure it out, and I usually make the conditions worse by trying, so pretty much everything I do is hydro. This chore requires the good-ole DIY bubble cloner (I'm positive there is a thread around here on how to make one).

This (and its opposing mate) are the branches I'm going to take.

Heres the twins snipped 'n' groomed soaking in a weak hormex solution. While they do that, I can get my equipment set up 'n' checked out.

Nothin' special about my cloner, and I had great results with it 6 years ago.

The guts of it. Nothin fancy...2 bubble wands, and a submersible adjustable fishtank heater.

Good thing I checked...check valve on an airline was cracked.

I pulled out the check valve, and viola! mo' bubbles. I tossed the lid on for a couple of minutes just to make sure.

Yep, saturation looks good.

I fill my bubbler till the stems are about 1/4 inch in the water. I left the ph at 7, added 5 drops of hormex ( a lil bit of this stuff goes miles), set the twins in and let her rip.

Everytime I've cloned, the cuttings always wilt a bit, so I try to do my cloning in the hours before lights out. Then they get a whole dark cycle to pull themselves together. Usually, they'll perk up by the morning.

Thats about it for that, now just the waiting 'n watching. I get the stinkin' suspicion that the mystery plant will be a boy, but who knows? I could be "the one plant"...flowers and finishes in a week with huge buds and a smoke that will

stay safe 'n' keep growin'

Mr. Bill -
Ya, stayed up too late last nite, got up too early this AM...fallin' asleep at the keys! I have always pretty much kept my cloning in the same room as the veg ing plants, just further away from the light. they get 18/6, just with less intense light :)

ETA - I haven't started my plant flowering yet, but hopefully will see some lil' white hairs soon!
