Need diagnosis help - seedling leaves going brown

A friend of mine has just started his first grow, an indoor soil grow w/ a 400w HPS, and a medium of 50% perlite and 50% premium general-purpose potting mix which has time-release nutrients. Cab temperatures are on average 35C/95F, as low as 29C/84F, and as high as 39C/102F, though my guess is that the temps are ok (not ideal, but suffice). Air circulation seems fine, with both an intake and exhaust fans. He's been watering with about 275mls/9.3oz of water a day.

Here is the seedling:

As you can see the cotyledons have gone yellow quickly

Here is the exact same seedling, but 11 days older:

So any suggestions as to the cause? (Nutrient burn or deficiency maybe?) And any suggestions as to action to take? I've never done any soil grows myself so hopefully some of the experienced soil growers here will know what's happening.

Many thanks in advance

Looks hungry to me.

Those time release nutrients may not be releasing yet. Or just not enough of them.

Have any liquid nutrients? Or powders to mix in?

They look like they could use a good vegative formula.

Also, you dont want to water everyday. Soak the soil till it begins to drain out the bottom, then let it dry out almost completly before doing it again.

hey :) I'm that friend with the problem :p

It's the best potting mix they had at the store. It is controlled release fertiliser that lasts up to 9 months though. I know it isn't ideal, it is my first time growing and I wanted to make it a bit more simple.

Now, if the problem is not enough fertiliser, maybe I could take the plant outside, and then get the hose and just soak and allow water to pass through the bottom? That would activate the timed release fertilisers more ey? I hope it wouldnt kill the seedling (would aim around it!)

and so watering, I know I haven't been under watering. I put 275ml's in every day (spread around the pot, not just in the middle) and a bit comes out the bottom and I leave it (by the same time next day its totally evaporated). It is always moist underneath the surface though.

can temperature cause this sort of problem? I mean it is obvious this plant is growing incredibly slow. I do have high temperatures, the problem is when the hot air goes out it heats my room, and then the air that comes back in is hot. Thinking of moving to a place where the hot air goes straight out the window, with a fan on the ceiling to move air around.

I used to have the light about 40cm away from the plant but I moved it to about 60cm because it wasn't growing much (thought maybe the light was too much) but its still quite slow.

heh. so, the hose idea sound good?

edit: and i know my medium looks quite barky in the picture but i assure you it isn't :). feels like some good soil.

I will tell you right now, they are probably nute burn and over watered.

Water when they need it, which at that stage is not often

And plants do not require any food at all till at least week 3 of their lives

o rily? so you're saying too much nutrients and too much watered?

I'll cut down watering then, so i'll water when its dry underneath the surface as well then.

too much nutrients though? or not enough?

never use soil with time release, it just causes problems. that looks like to much perlite, and to woody of a potting soil

tell your friend to start over with a quality bagged soil ( FFOF / canna )

m8888.... get ur asses down to bunnings and buy a $2 bag of seed raising mix and a $2 brick of coco. 50/50 mix and get em in that asap. they will prob be dead by morning if u dont..
they look pretty sativa dom so i would just wet em in and leave em be for a few days.

good luck bro

I'd say nutrient burn and to much water, go buy a sack of Ocean Forest Soil and re-plant or start over.

I never fed babies anything till they are six inches high...

peace, k9

I'm going with not enough water. The wood chips in the photo are light gray in color. A wet chip, one that was soaked would be darker.

So what's the verdict ... too many nutrients or not enough???

too much nutes

Too much water

Regardless of the wood chips color. 35 c has a way of drying stuff out pretty quick, and it really makes no difference what is happening on top of the soil, it is below that counts

Im surprised more people dont know about the seedling feed me gauge.....

In this case the plant is clearly starving....

The feed me gauge are the cotyledons....

If the plant is happy and well fed the cotyledon leaves will last longer....

If the plant is very hungry the cotyledon leaves turn yellow very quickly.....

For example with promix....when Im potting up my babies.....

I give em some pure blend from day 1.....

cause if I dont they will yellow very quickly.....

 ... we're still left here with two camps, one saying "the plant is clearly starving", the other saying "the plant clearly has too much nutes" ... and both camps seem quite resolute!

See what I mean!? hehe ... 2 camps each resolute that their diagnosis is the correct one :)
It's like when you have an illness and you go to several doctors for confirmation, only to find out that half of them think you have something, when the other half think you have something else :)

But the feedback has been very good so I thank everyone, whether they're right or wrong, please keep it coming :)
This is my friends first grow and he'll inevitably learn a hell of a lot from this as well as all your feedback

btw, Burnt Rope i don't think anybody in this thread has ever questioned yours (or anybodys) credibility, so lets not go down that hill :)

Really? :noway:
I am not sure where you learned that from, but it is incorrect, plants from seed do not require any food, at least for about 2 to 3 weeks

Fair enough again....

but a plant with too much water looks droopy.....

because its not getting air....

this plant looks just fine.....just small and yellow.....

so.... I have to ask....

where did you learn that from?????

:dueling:

rotflmfao......

By the way.... anyone know someone doing hydro without any nutes for 2 or 3 weeks.....

rotflmfao..... again.....
