Taking apart a Mills Pride C13 style cabinet

Hey all,
I have a Mills Pride C13 style cabinet, it's actually a closetmaid from home depot but It's too big to fit up my stairwell so I can move it into my room to setup. I have to take it apart but.... I can't seem to get that backing of the cabinet off. It's some pressed fiber cardboard backing that I nailed into the back and nail are soo small my hammer can't pull them out. Any ideas on how to get these out without ripping up the cabinet's backing?

get a small nail puller>>like this

or you could take a stiff blade putty knife and force it carefully between the backing and the body of the cabinet (right next to the nail)...and slowly wiggle it so that it loosens the nails enough to get a grab on em with your claw hammer

hope you understand what i'm sayin' lol
good luck

I just built one of those cabinets; that backing is just cardboard. I don't think you'l get those little tacks out without tearing things up. I put my backing on with the white side out instead of in, so the inside was nice dark brown. I thought I might pry it off and reverse it; I took one look and picked at it a little bit, and said no way that's coming off in one piece. I left it, and wound up painting the inside white..

I'd just go ahead and tear the back off, pry the tacks out with a putty knife. Replace that piece of crap back with a piece of 1/8" hardboard; the whole cabinet will be a lot stronger when you're done.

That small nail puller looks pimp, I tried your putty knife idea, I just happened to have a very thin putty knife (the kind you use for opening a mac mini) and it's working! I've done a bit of tearing but nothing serious so far.. i'm 1/2 way complete but it's a PITA.

Kermit:
I thought about the getting some hardboard or masonite but I've already cut all the vent holes and stuff in this thing so if I can keep it, it's less work for me. I'm supposed to have started my grow this season already so I'm in rush mode!

Thanks guys!

Putty knife, side it under the edges, slowly pry up from both sides. If that doesn't work, say screw it, toss the backing and go to a lumberyard, home depot, etc and get a piece of 1/4" plywood cut to the same size. I used MDF but I wasn't going to move it again.
