Exhaust fans? Is it 100% mandatory?

Hi all,

I have a question..I'm gonna be doing my first grow in a large scale basement that has plenty of room(it's about 10x12x7 1/2') and theres an opening that leads to another section of the basement which is three times bigger than what I stated in the smaller room. Now, my questions..

1) How hot would it get in there under 2 1000watt's? Mind you I live in Canada, so right now temps are around 15-18C in the basement room I mentioned with our heater running.

2) Can I have a fan blowing in from the other section of the basement I told you? So there would be a look-alike door opening that has a fan in the middle of it blowing air into the grow room from the other room(so air is coming from the other room).

3) I have no place to put the exhaust fan, my basement walls are concrete and the windows are too bait to have anything come out of it. If I keep temps at 23-28C would there be a need for an exhaust fan? If I do, what is the easiest setup/cheap setup I could do to create a exhaust fan with a place I could put it in. Also, the room has a underpath kind of thing that leads into the next section of the room(right under the sta

No you dont need an exahaust fan. You could do what you mentioned with the fan blowing air from the other room. The temp shouldnt get too hot.

But some type of intake fan would be good, bringing air from the outside enviroment....
You need proper air circulation and fresh air from outside is always the best....

If temps are fine, and you have a fan blowing, you just have to worry about humidity.

If you have 2000 watts in there it will get hot.

Is there any space for a small airconditioner? That would work best for ventilation and temp. issues during the summer. But it is winter... Does it stay at a stable temp in the basement?

try testing out 2 1000 watts and see how it goes, MJ is a hardy plant, but she still will need fresh air, so i'd get an intake blower.. if with 2 1000's ur room hovers at 80-85, consider using c02 as opposed to intake fan

as long as there is a source of co2,you can seal the room and use a/c to cool,it was cheaper for me to buy a co2 system and enclose the room than try to vent

I am just a noob but I think you will still need some kind of exhaust to exchange the air. I believe exhaust fans are less about maintaining the temperature and more about exchanging fresh air so your girls have nice clean air to breath. But as I said I am just a noob, wait for more advice :)

as long as you get enough fresh air in and used air out to and from the bigger room you will be ok

Thanks for your replies.

However, It's not that I don't want the exhaust fan it's just that I don't see a spot to place it anywhere in the grow room. I mean, there's gonna be a door that is open 100% of the time with a fan blowing in the room from the outside of the door, is that okay?

Also, I can keep the basement at 13-18C consistently if I leave the house heater at 15-20C(which is where it's usually at right now).

I see most of you guys are suggesting I pickup a CO2..can I just pickup a large bundle of dried ice and put it into a container and poke holes in the top of the container that way the dried ice dissolves slowly, therefor a steady supply of CO2 for a while. I mean, I'm pretty short in cash I already spent about $700 in the setup which is a 4x8 ebb n flow setup with 2 1000 watt HPS's and a 600 watt MH for veg room.

unless your doing a sealed room an out take fan is a must imho. you'll need a good air exchange to keep your temps right and to keep everything fresh. other wise you'll end up with problems such as mould. to help with odour control make sure you have negative pressure, which means having a larger outtake than intake. and buy the best carbon filter you can afford. good luck with what ever you go with mate.

dry ice cheap up front very expensive over the long haul,a tank, regulator, and timer is about 300 -400 if you can be there everyday and i mean everyday than open the door, stick a big box fan pointing out of the room should work okay, not great but ok.

The door would be open 100% of the time. Also I did a bit of research on the Co2 tanks and I came up across this site that lists parts and a guide on how to set it up yourself for a low cost of $150 or less.

So if I run this CO2 tank I can keep my room without any exhaust fans but only a fan that is circulating? However, since the room has an opening..I don't see how fresh air won't be getting in from other parts of the basement. I might be a little lost on this subject, like I said this is my first grow and I've been inspired by all of you!

as long as your temps dont get too high its ok
you will want to close the door if you run a co2 tank

like i said, you can just push the old air out the open door, if you can get enough fresh air in there

there isnt windows in the basement that you could run an in/out to?

definitely get a good vent system, those temps will get hot! Also, when combating room temperature, make sure to keep an eye on rez temps as well.
