have light cant tell if hps or metal halide

hey guys
i just picked up a 250 watt light but cant tell if its hps or mh. the bulb only says 250 watt and the ballast says the same but neither say if hps or mh. the bulbs colout is inbetween a mh and hps like fairly white but slightly orange. any ideas on how i can confirm what it is?

A bigger bulb indicates a MH where a smaller thin one indicates a HPS

You can also tell by the guts of the bulb. MH has a short stout inside, whereas HPS has a long tube inside

And finally HPS is orange, MH is more blue

long and skinny or is it a chubby?

Is it magnetic? Check ballast for model number. S50 is HPS an M58 is Metal Halide

problem solved guys, was a quick one. i gopt adventurous and pulled apart the ballast and it was printed on i litte dooby watset iside. its a mercury vapour. dont spose they serve any purpose in growing do they?, thanks heaps for the input to.

dont think they are very efficient to grow with. might work jus not that well, i dunno for sure tho but im sure i read that those were ones not to use for growing or were the older style lamps from years back that no one uses anymore.

you would be better of using cfls than the mercury vapor....cfls would give you more intensity ....so i guess that gives you an idea...
....would be better off putting it in the shed so ya dont bump into things when its dark .HH. =]-~

Actually medium sized 150w HPS bulbs look like the smaller one in the MH pic..its just the higher wattage HPS bulbs that look like that

these mh bulbs are new to me! all i have seen look pretty similar to hps..
