1200W 12 Plant RDWC in a SUNHUT XXL

Greetings again ICMAG. After a long time planning I have made the move cross country and I can finally grow my meds legally, this if my first time growing hydro and I chose a 12 plant RDWC setup.

The basic setup is:
2x 600W HPS
1/10HP Water Chiller
12x 5 Gallon buckets
Hydrofarm Pre-made reservoir and control bucket combo
6" Can-fan
XXL Sun Hut (4'x8')
One big 8 outlet air pump and a smaller 4 outlet.

Before setting up I bust out the goodies!

Unfortunately I received the 12 clones I requested much quicker that I expected and was completely unprepared, they also came in 6in rockwool cubes which really screwed me over.

Strains are: Headband, Sour Diesel, Bubba Kush

The setup is pretty basic, I looked at what people here had going on and duplicated it with what I could find locally.

I have had the plants in the tent for about a week and a half now, of the original 12 four died during the first week and another 5 aren't doing very well. Basically from what I can tell the 6in rockwool cubes held too much moisture and basically drowned the root systems of the plants. I tried breaking down the cubes without harming the roots and it worked for three of the plants so far. After a few days of no progress on the other five I tried completely removing them from the cubes (most barely had any root growth over the past week) so I will see over the next few days if they are going to survive or not.

My next plan of action is to relocate the fan and carbon filter to inside of the tent instead of behind it, hopefully this also improves the cooling of the hoods and will allow me to push these 600s closer to the plants.

The nutrients I currently have them on (though only three are actually touching the water at this point) is Iguana Juice which a friend swears by, ph hovers around 5.8-6.0 and pph is around 800-900.

At this point I am waiting on a lead for new clones, I am considering just allowing the healthiest of each strain to veg and cutting it apart for fresh clones.

Pretty kick ass I would surely cut back on the nutes and I wouldnt use any rockwool in the rdwc you should take all of it of right away (which you found out) I do agree that you just make a few mothers to chop apart its nice to have all the clones on the same track. Looking forward to seeing things blow up good luck.

Hey there nice room :)

If you don't mind I would like to agree with Big Green on lowering your nutes. I have run RDWC for a couple years and I start at 250-300ppm @ .5 conversion. Your three big ones could handle a bit more maybe 450 but you are def way to high. The one in the back left is suffering form high nutes for sure. I have used peat plugs and rockwool in my DWC buckets. I have never had any problems with rockwool, but I can see why it would be advised not to. After your roots grab ass your water should be a couple inches lower then your netpot anyways so rockwool if not resting on the bottom of the netpot should be fine. Transplanting into DWC isn't that bad but can be a bit tricky. What I do is run 250-300ppm, leave about 2 inches of hydroton on bottom of netpot, or just to where the water level is, and 1-3 times a day I scoop nutrient solution out in a container and feed the plants from the top. This makes them very happy.

cool.. you think you could run two 1000's instead of 600's in there??

Well after my dead clone troubles I decided I don't want to run three plants in this thing so I decided to cut them down and make clones. I filled all 30 spots on my ez-cloner and now after six days more than half are showing roots.

I completely tore down the step for cleaning and to rearrange some things, I am going to finish putting it back together today and tomorrow.

My biggest concern at the moment is transplanting the clones into the hydroton balls, right now the best solution seems to be either soaking the bucket it water and just placing the cutting in the middle of the floating balls or maybe take some shredded rockwool and place it around the roots to help protect them from the balls.

What do you guys think?

The two larger plants and a runt with an attempt to transplant to soil after taking the cuttings.

Roots after 6 days, the headband cuts seem to be doing well and the sour diesel are falling behind (two rows on the right)

How soon will I need to feed these clones and can anyone give advice on transplanting them straight into hydroton.

the way i do it (100% success rate :I). let those roots get just a lil longer. about 6 inches long. pull the clone out the neoprene plug and postion it in the center of ur netpot and pull the longest root through the bottom of the net pot so it will hang down into the solution. then slowly add the hydroton around to support the clone. when you put the netpot in the bucket, make sure the water level is no more then 1 inch from touching the bottom of the netpot. this way the bubbles will wet the hydroton and promote the developing roots to come out, plus u gonna have at least one root already in the solution.

hope that wasnt too confusing. :) and btw, no more then 250 ppms

happy growing bro

Well its been a while since I have updated but the news is good.

I had great success with cloning the headband (not the sour diesel though, but I still have a mother plant and will try again later) and filled the twelve buckets with new clones. They have all grown out of the buckets at this point and have roots in the water, here a photo from today which is the end of week two in the buckets.

Some plants are lagging but I think they will catch up in the next week, due to the water at my house being so bad (440PPM&7.1PH) I am going to add a Stealth-RO100 Reverse Osmosis System before my next water change and use my current filter (Hydrologic Small Boy) as a pre-filter.

I am sure that I missed out on a lot of the things I wanted to say but I better hit submit before I forget about this post.

Its been a while, It was a long month dealing with a massive algae problem which resulted in me cutting off all of the roots. I flushed the system more times than I want to remember and everything is finally running smooth. Running 800PPM + Aqua Shield and CalMag

Just switched them to 12/12.

Looking good. Next time you put your plants in veg when there 8" top em in a few days top the shoots that out grow the rest it will give you nice bushes and you will easily out yield this crop. What kind off algae problem did you have?
Nice grow and good luck

Nice grow and good luck

I had green algae in the system before due to huge light leaks. I also didn't turn my chiller down low enough (or it reset after losing power) so water was 70-75f and is now 65-70f. The big kicker with the algae was when I added Aqua Shield to prevent it and due to my organic nutrients (Iguana Juice) it EXPLODED. Now I am running non organic nutes (floranova)

I will def be heavily LST/topping next grow to turn these into proper bushes, just trying to dial it in.
