Blockhead male - make seeds?

I got some of the last blockhead beans offered up a few months ago and popped 6 and ended up with 5 females and 1 male. The flowers have not opened up on the male yet but there are clusters that are almost ready to open. He's in a room with the BH girls and some ISS and chemo. I would like to make some crosses with this BH male but don't know how without pollinating the whole room. Whats the best way to selectively pollinate a couple flowers without the whole room going to seed?

Do it! Make more seeds if you can.

collect the pollen and use a brush to paint it onto bottom "popcorn" buds

I'm with Arctic. Cut up a garbge bag, place it on the ground under the plant and shake it 'like a polaroid picture' till you can see the pollen against the black of the bag. Are you able to seperate the plant? keep it outside so that you can wait till the pollen sacks are full, that way you can perhaps stop the whole room from getting pollinated. Protect it from wind though so you dont lose a lot of polllen once the sacks are swollen. I dont know, I guess I'm not really qualified but if anyone else who is qualified gives some good advice...take it. Just putting in my 2 cents.:joint:

You can get that male and separate him from the females , if you have the space. I lean mine over a plate glass. Every now and then, I'll tap the stem and let the pollen fall, then collect. You can also cut the branches and put them in a cup/glass of water. Be careful to keep everything dry as you do that, though. These are the methods that have worked for me. Doing it right now as a matter of fact. It would be wise to save some of that BH pollen.

How long into flower does a male normally start to release his pollen? I have a very stinky vigorous Chunky cheese male and want to cross him to some new blue cheese clones i got.

I start my looking at around 2 1/2 weeks, just to make sure that he doesn't start dropping pollen without my knowledge. From that point on, keep a close lookout.

The male can live in another room by a window. Put the pot in a box and close the flaps up around the stem of the male. Cut slits in the flaps so the stem can slide in. Now take a paper bag or newspaper and make like a christmas tree skirt out of it. Make a slit so the stem can go to the center and flatten it out under the leaves. Look for pollen on the paper. When you see flowers opening give the plant a little shake or tap. When you have enough pollen just chuck the male in the compost pile outside.

The males stay quite happy with just windowsill light. In winter (now for me) the light outside is 12/12 or less. I have found that even in lighted rooms and only 8 hours dark the males chuck pollen for quite awhile.

Then put a twist tie on the branches you pollenate. I use a tiny coke spoon like scoop and tap it on the buds. You can use an artist paint brush too. Turn off you room fans before using any method.

Ideally select a mother (receptive)plant. And allow it to coexist with the male (donor) plant in the same space away from the other females. This will see that healthy procreation takes place between male and selected female and will reduce the risk of open pollination across all your plants.

Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for the help. I will post some pics of the male tonight and I think i'm going to take DocLeaf & Gypsy's suggestion and let them make seed by putting the male and a couple select females in another room.
