Renting a houe to grow in, but not live there....is it safe?

Hey Gramps, hmm not sure on the terminology, but it sounds like could be the same thing. Yep agreed, if the feds allow the medical defense the DEA will pretty much have to wash its hands of weed and california! :)

Personally I would not have a grow house that I did not live in only for the reason that blending in and looking like normal "joe" isn't that hard. Just be smart and use common sense. The biggest problem I see with renting a house you do not live is no knowing your neighbors. Like someone said earlier you should have an idea on the personalities in your neighborhood. Also if your landlord needs to come see the house and you can not make it within the 24-48 hrs (the time they usually give you as heads up!) Also what to do with emergencies? Keep that in mind.

Lazy hope that works out for yah man! Lazy's idea sounds a little better because it has its cover already built in with the people living in the house and his op being in the basement. I didint even know houses in CA had basements! LOL

Lazyman your idea sounds killer! I wish an opportunity like that would show itself to me! And, knowing Sonoma only from drive-throughs, most houses are on giant lots, you'd probably be safer than most!

Maxyield, sorry for the threadjack man, I feel bad. I think it all depends on the spot, if you do find a place hidden from the road and no neighbors watching you (I live in the country and can tell you most of their schedules) but it can be done.

Spend time there, outside, visibly and often if you have outdoorsy neighbors. Some of the folks on my road live indoors year round, me I'm outside all the time doing yardwork. Keep the place nicer looking than your neighbors, if at all possible. Paint the fence, plant flowers, and mow your lawn and water everything. I spend more time on keeping up appearences than I do growing, but I live next to my grow too.

Who are these neighbors that notice when you come and go, and how long you stay while you're there? I see my neighbors about once a week and have no clue what they're doing in the meantime.

What if the landlord is a close friend and agrees to put all utilities in their name? I only ask because I have heard of people working it out like this. They get a good security set up and check it through a fake email before they go over. Any other things to think about? Peace smoke and safety

i doubt a landlord would want to get involved if he gets nothing out of it. if leo proves he knew anything about the op, the state gets the property, if its not a legal op

Holy shit, I think I got me a basement. 23.5' X 41' X 6'4" tall. Gonna do a drying room, veg room, and a 15KW flower room. Has 200A power, a natural gas water heater and a sink, concrete floors. I'm gonna go celebrate!

If you're not planning on living there, leave an older car in the driveway, and a pair of large size construction boots in front of the front door. You could also have the lamps and the television on timers as well.

I never said the landlord got nothing out of it. Just assumed some of the blanks could be filled in by logical reasoning. Say landlord charges a really high rent ok. Then what else besides never being there but twice a week would you want to look out for.

the high rent would have to be really high, unless the property aint worth shit.
how much would you be willing to except a month to have the chance of your property worth $400,000 or more taken, and possible jail time?

Not trying to threadjack, but I've been looking at renting a coworker/friends basement for growing. They have a big house in the country, a huge basement, gates, guns, guard dogs, the works. Their house is in danger of getting repoed and I want to help them out by renting their basement and paying their PG&E, and moving my grow over there (it's 5 minutes from my house.) I would have the only key to the basement and they wouldnt use it at all any more, it would become my rental basically. What do you think guys, any opinions?
Dude how does a hours get repoed? :yoinks:

Any larger grow in a residential home is a bad idea.

And I'm gonna tell you why:

Where I used to live before I moved to this island it was common practice by the electric coop to monitor DAILY use of electricity.

Comparisons to average use were done by automated systems.

If the power consumption was a percentage above average...the account was flagged.

What happens next in cases like the above you can read HERE.

There are 100's of articles like that all over the net.

And if you think that ain't gonna happen where the house you have in mind is...go right ahead and take a chance.
Any residential electricity account is subject to monitoring these days.
