hey folks. i was hoping to get some feedback on a situation I'd like to resolve...I'm growing tomatoes & peppers indoors over the winter and would like to add a mh light to the room. right now I've got a t5 in a large cabinet and a 1000w hps in the other...the t5 cabinet starts my plants and then I've been moving in to the other room. I'd like to add a metal halide lamp to the the room w/ the 1000w hps. here is my question (finally)....the MH that I add...does it need to be 1000w or will something a little lower be okay? thank you.

It certainly does not need to be another 1000w. It can be any wattage you like, it's supplementary lighting. More is better, 1000 watts plus (400/600/1000) is better than just 1000watts
I'm not sure what pangolin means by 'full sized' tomato strains, but generally cherry tomato varieties are bigger plants, they have more of a vining habit and grow long and spindley.

It is possible to grow veggies indoor over winter using less light,, baring in mind that the idea is to reap a yield:cost ratio in favour of yield. :D hope this helps

Thanks Doc. I recently constructed a hoop house next to my indoor site for just that reason. What do you all think about using a dual arc bulb in this setup? Seems like it would give me exactly what I'm needing, as I've read that tomatoes and peppers are not photoperiod plants. I've found a dual arc 1000w which offers less luminosity to my plants, but more of the spectrum which I feel I need. anyone have any information on that? I've searched the forums but most all the posts were dealing with mj.

update- I ordered my 1000w dual arc bulb this morning and should get it next week. I'll throw it into the indoor veggie garden and see what she can do.

Update:
The dual arc tube came in and is up. I did not take pictures of the room before and after but I will. The light looks great! I know this is kind of obvious....but you can really see the color blend very well. Today under it grows 6 tomatoes, 2 watermelon and 5 peppers. The watermelon needs some help, so perhaps this light can help out.

used to grow toms at the edge of my mj mothers room using sylvania 1000 mh 4k they love the xtra blue, but needed mag sulphate foliar feed for perfection.
