North American Kelp has some great products but I cannot remember how much I paid. I do remember the shipping for a 50 lb bag was more than the Kelp cost itself......I lived in Florida at the time.

Kind of strange, but lately I have been getting some great deals on organic amendments on Ebay of all places. The other day I scored a box of POM rock phosphate for 6 dollars, and the guy threw in a box of POM Fruit and Flower for free. Shipping was like 8 bucks.

I heard a quote once, went something like this, " you get what you pay for". there was another one that went something like this , " garbage in = garbage out "

Are you looking for kelp meal? If so, I'd check your local feed store.

If it's seaweed extract powder, the two best sources in my opinion are Acadian Seaplants in Canada and Nature's Essence SEP from Pennsylvania.

Here's an example, but remember that a little goes a long way and typically a lb. will last you a year or two.

In my opinion, it's the best organic amendment based on health/growth value to the plant and cost to purchase.

Only the ignorant insist on a direct relationship between cost and value. Mr. Greengenes says; "You don't get what you pay for, you get what you know. And, the more you know, the more you get".

I'm giving a thumbs up to the 11lb bag I bought from Peaceful Valley.

It seems to be good quality.. The microorganisms love it.

Takes a bit of time to break down in bubble.. Which I think is good.

Made a simple soak in hot water and watered once it was cool.. All good!

So yes indeed a little goes a long way.. sealed the kelp meal in smaller bags so it will stay fresh longer.

99% of things are overpriced, but that should not affect quality things that come with quality price tags..

I would say the more you know, the more you can sift through the rubbish..

kelp has been free along our shores for as long as i can remember, unless it comes from a marine sanctuary. it breaks down fast! be sure to shake any poor critters off when you collect them. thanks

One issue with this thread is we're discussing different products. Are you looking for kelp meal or soluble kelp extract powder?

Mr. Greengenes, I both agree and disagree with your statement. I think there is to a certain extent a relationship between price and quality. With the seaweed, you have to look at the harvesting methods and the way they process the seaweed. Using harsh chemicals to treat the seaweed is cheaper than cold water processing. Hence, you get a lower price for an inferior product. You're not going to find a Mercedes for the same price as a Hyundai, but if you shop around among comparable products, you can usually find good discounts as many products are overpriced (just ask CC).

If you're harvesting your own kelp, you'll need to wash the salts off and then compost it.

I ask because powder allow for foliar applications is all and I believe it's accessible faster to the plant.
