I been reading a few of the many great sources of information along with the great grow logs. After drooling for 2 - 3 weeks was time to join and say hello !!!

First seeds are germinating *chemo*. What would you all recomend for my first grow.. Soil or Hydro/DWC?

Thank you for the place to learn!!

Welcome friend,

Both are achievable by newbs, DWC can be incredibly simple. Everything has its pros and cons. I suggest spending some time reading the forum and taking some notes. Good Luck!

Thank you Ellie!!!

I want start germination of some sensi star seeds as well as some PTK someone was so gracious to help a beginner out with. I want to grow DWC and have everything set up but after not having much luck with previous germination using rockwool cubes leaning again towards soil. LOL

I soaked the previous seeds for 24 hours then placed in rockwool cube kept in a 70-80 degree area in a tin foil pan, which had a good ventilated plastic top on it. As seeds started to sprout, I and added 2 300 W CFL's for light.

Only 2 out of 5 sprouted and those died on me too :{

I would greatly appreciate any advice, as well as a good vendor to buy more beans from.

Thank you

Hi Jbonham, and welcome.

I just throw them in a glass of water with a couple of drops of 50% peroxide and sometimes a drop of superthrive. Then after 12 hrs straight into rockwool or soil (fyto, coir, whatever). Keep moist but not wet and warm but not hot, your temps sound ok I run between 72-82f but prefer dead on 77f. Lots of things can kill seedlings from damping off due to overwatering/pythium to some fungal spores which may have been transferred with the purchased/gifted seeds or are naturally in your environment etc etc. I used to use copper oxy chloride at planting time which guards against a lot of fungal problems, I use peroxide though now unless shit is really suss, the B1 or superthrive is used in case the seeds are a bit old and lackluster. Finally until my plants are 4 inches high usually I have 1 130w fluro over a 900 ebbnflow table at about 12 inches off the table, I find this is plenty of light and doesn't stress them out or burn em crispy. Everyone is different in their methods and with a bit of trial and error you will find what works for you.

Good luck with your grow.

p.s. There is lots of information on all these aspects of germination on this site, if you have the time search around a bit.

Sweet h2o2 great news since I use same mixture for my other fruiting hobby........LOL

Matter of a fact I was just reading in FAQS on germination.

Soil dampness for me seems to be easier to maintain than working with rockwool but not giving up going to practice with some swag seed to help learn.lol

Old well man .... old enough to have seen Led Zepplin when Jb was alive but was unlucky there on scoring a ticket......LOL

PH is still confusing to me using hydro. I have humbolt 3 step. micro, grow, bloom. If I recall from reading I want to maintain a 6.5 PH which is a tad bit under neutral. I am used to using lime etc with my other peat, vermic worm castings etc mixtures and working towards neutral PH 7.0

Is the exact PH level more crucial in hydro or soil or both? if I am right plans require a more acidic environment? vs mycology ph neutral

thanks

Go with organic. I started out with some bottled crap. Im not gonna say their name ,but I think they are pretty popular. Anyways, I was having problems with the babes in flower, and diecided to go organic. Best chocie I made. I have pretty much no problems now, plus I feel closer to my plants. Dont know maybe I over medicated. Just my opinion. Take it easy and stay safe.

I agree with all of the above, organic's easier, and can add Gypsy Nirvana and Highgrade for seeds always did me right. Happy growing Jbon.
