Is 800w too much for a 4x2 table?

I have a reasonably good setup going with a 400w HPS and a 4x2 e&f table but the 400 watter doesn't really have the coverage to light the full 4 foot span all that well so I end up not using 1/4 of the table. I do a perpetual grow, adding a few new clones every couple weeks, what I would like to do is get a MH light for one end of the table where they are in their first few weeks and as they grow they move down the table ending up under the HPS. Idealy I think I'd like to get a 250w MH but the local shop only has 150 or 400w MH......so would 2 400w light be too much for a 4x2 space? Total room space is about 5x2.5 feet and well ventilated.

A lot of people won't agree with me but you said that it would be ventilated properly. I think it would work and you will have some nice well rounded big buds. I would however watch how close I had the lights to the top of the plants, as it is kind of an "overkill" for that area. However I think that it WILL work out.

4X2 huh? that sounds like one of those cabs from home depot. with that type of space i would say you could save some money and go with 2x250HPS. all u would have to do is hang them equidistant from each other in the cab and horizontally. for that type of space and the white walls, u should be ok.

you didnt mention your height, or is that the 5' you were talking about? i'll assume and say that, if youve got a res in there with a table, youve got a 1.5'-2' of space already taken up (not to mention the height of your grow containers) and your lights are gonna take up about 6" -10" of top space, so if youve got 5' total of space, youve got 3.+' of actual grow space.

i could be wrong but the more information you give the better the community can help you, and some of us are waiting for plants to veg so yeah some of us do have some time to spare to help ya out. *(gotta give more details as far as space dimensions)

Thanks Kusherman, I think it's pushing it, but I don't think i'll be happy with the results if I add a 150w so I'd really prefer to go 400.

Let me clarify for Frank, it's not a cab it is a room that measures 5' long by 2.5' wide and 7.5 or 8' tall (I cant remember the height of my basement ceiling right now heh). Inside of this small room there is a flood and drain table measuring 4 feet long by 2 feet wide sitting on a table at about waist height (again, cant remember exactly - not measuring but height is not an issue, im doing just fine with the one light, i just want to add a second one). Heat shouldn't be an issue, I live in fairly cold climates but even through the summer I never saw the temps in the room go more than 3 degrees above the temp in the rest of my house. As far as getting 2 250 watts - as I mentioned in my original post, I have have no way of getting a 250w MH locally so my choices are 150w (too small imo) or 400w. I think 400 is probably overkill but as long as its not going to cause problems I'd rather go too big than be unhappy with a light thats too small.

I think you will love it, and be happy you didnt go with the 250. I have always used 1000 watts per 4x4' square. 2 400's would be top notch. It will allow you to pull the lights back a bit to ensure scent/flavor development while still getting good light intensity. Best of luck to ya,
RM
