I had a long talk with a friend of mine and we were discussing the logistics and ideology around the illegality of cannabis and its by-products. Which basically equated to a theological cannabis pissing match, and erupted into two definitive hypothesis....

Do you mean, "why is cannabis still illegal?" or, "How was cannabis originally outlawed?"

Well its pretty obvious to me that dupont and hearst where some of the main opponents of cannabis due to its hemp byproducts, but we are mainly speaking in terms of why cannabis remains illegal, when a overwhelming majority of our society believes it should not house any penalties for its production or consumption.

It was originally outlawed because of corporate interests and racism, it is still illegal because the privatized prison system needs constant fodder...

Throughout history cannabis and related products were demonized by WHITES because they came in the pockets of BROWN people. In the beginning IT was all about racism.

Now, it's so complicated it is scary!

I think it's still illegal because the people who want it legalized don't (won't?) do enough to make it happen.

Everyone above posted all the good reasons! Anslinger and Hearst didn't want to lost their timber dollars to hemp, Nixon just didn't like hippies, and now, prisons would go broke without enough inmates to fill their cells.

Thank the cannabis gods I live in a med-friendly state!

It started with Racism.

Now its still illegal because of its many uses as a medicine and a recreational activity.

Alcohol+Cigarette companies are scared of pot becoming legalized because they would loose billions.

Pharmaceuticals are terrified due to the fact of all its medical benefits, so they would loose billions and billions.

End of story..

I chose "CANNABIS IS ILLEGAL BECAUSE OF HEMP AND THE MANY USES THAT HEMP"... Im still concerned though, if cannabis were to be legalized, and people realize how industrial a crop it is... wont industries like cotton textiles, paper, etc take a brutal beating? I dont really know much, if anything, about how these things play in the economy but wont these sectors lose a lot of jobs? Meaning a bunch of people are going to be laid off and the cotton (and other products that might suffer from hemp industries) establishments will go out of business? Of course there will be new jobs built around hemp and cannabis, but i think there should really be some kind of assessment on how it would affect factors like this and others..
