Sensi: Northern Lights #5 x Haze

Just ordered some of the sensi fem NL#5/Haze seeds. I have allways wanted to grow the original of this cross, and am mega-excited at finally getting the chance. I grew cheap positronics ones years back and they were very good, so i am expecting big things from these ones.

Problem i have is this. It says on the sensi write up for this strain, that cuttings/seedlings can be flowered right away after rooting/germination and still reach 1-1.5 metres in height.

It's not that that is too tall for me, but i most certainly want to take cuttings from the plants to look for a mother, but am not sure how i am going to do this.

Here are the two ways i can think of, neother of which i am very fond of.

1) Veg the plants until large enough for cuttings, take them, root them, and flower the cuttings and bin the seedplants. Seems such a waste of the seedplant though, and time.

2) Flower the seedlings soon after germination, and take cuttings off them once they are large enough, but in flower. I don't like this way, as i don't take cuts from flowering plants, and am not sure if they will root, or if it will upset the flowering plant at all.

With the last NL/Haze i grew, the plants about tripled, bit more on some phenos. I can handle a plant up to 3.5feet tall, 4 feet would be absolute max. So i was thinking i could veg them to about 8-10 inches, grab the cuttings and flower and end up with plants around the 3-4 foot mark.

But with sensi saying newly germinated seedlings and rooted cuttings can reach 1-1.5 metres tall, i am not so sure, and dont want to be caught with my pants down, so to speak, lol.

I am sure lots of the great growers and breeders here have grown this classic, and have some info on the strecth, and anything else about it, like expected flowering times, aroma etc, but mainly the stretch?

I've searched for info here and at other places, but can find buggar all on the stretch side of things, or even much detailed info about it. Please help! This is a big strain for me, been waiting to grow this for a long time and dont' want to feck it all up.

Peace and respect to all. Solid.

i just took a clone off a flowering plant. worked pretty well. rooted faster than normal also. just watch the high humidity because mold might show up.

solid,

i clone 3 weeks into flower, even 5 when ive been lazy. my outdoor i just cloned at harvest!! never a problem.

seed plants are stretchier than clones. the seed plant gonna keep growing after you flip to 12/12. they are just more vigorous that way.

clones seem to respond to the 12/12 more quickly. i had proposed in another thread cloning my sk#1 seed plants, then killing them. and then attempt to grow the clones in a bushier fashion, that i could from seed. well no one seemed to like that idea, but me.

good luck with those nl5haze. i know you were considering some other flavors too.

all the best

If you take the cuttings when they start to show pistils you shouldnt have a problem getting them to root. Your usually pretty good up till week 3.

Clones taken from a flowering plant will root faster then a vegging plant. The reason for this is that when in vegetative stage we use nutes that are high in Nitrogen and low in the p-k.Well you might not know it but Nitrogen actually delays rooting where fertilizers higher in p-k hasten the root development.

Now you don't have to wait until your donor plants are in flower or flowering.Simply stop feeding veg nutes for a few days to a week and hit it up with some flowering nutes to get an internal buildup of p&k.

why don't you kill two birds with one stone?

Top the plant a few times to keep it shorter/bushier and use those tops for your clones. after you ahve a few clones, flip to flower.

That's not a bad suggestion. If i say grew the plant to about 12-15 inches, topped it down to about 6-8 inches, used the cut off part for clones, let it grow to about 12 inches again, topped it and took more, then flowered a seedplant of about 6 inches, how tall do you rekon that would get? Would the double topping, keeping it very short and perhaps pruning the lower bud shoots aswell down to their lowest node, keep the plant from stretching too much, or would it stretch like hell anyway?

Seems worth a go, as by the time i have done all this double topping/pruning, the first set ofr cuts should be rooting anyway, so i could allways flower them if they were ready before. Interesting.

Had an email saying the seeds have been shipped today. Will need to germ them as soon as possible as it looks like it will take a while to get to harvest with these.
