Karynne's grow thread. 21 site, 2000 watt vertical hydro

Hi boys and girls, I wanted to share with the world what I have been up to! Unfortunately there are no pics as of yet, things are still in early stages.

I have a 54cu ft room, well its really a giant box. It has 7 vertical units that all connect to an octagonal drain base, which goes back into my reservoir. And each of these 7 units has three sites in it!

I have two (hopefully) mothers 4 weeks into veg right now and are looking quite good.

I have a 28 site clone aeroponic clone box I built. the res and the box run off the same pump which is something like 600gph if I recall correctly.

The res is a little small, but it gives me a chance to either change it out or top it up every second day or so, its all we could work out with the size restrictions we have.

There are 4 120mm 44cfm fans blowing into the box at the bottom giving me 3x my cuft blown in per minute. I also have a 60cfm exhaust fan, just a single one that breathes through a carbon filter and up and out the top. this fan has three different speed settings, which I think will come in handy for odor control/db.

There WILL be two 1000watt units inside the box, but currently I have only funded the one as building this box took a toll on the wallet

I expect to hit a high respectable yield by the time the second crop is harvested. I need the first one to pay me back and any profits will be used for upgrades. then its smooth sailing from then on! I need to fund a co2 system, some ppm testers and a second light. so far I have spent $1500 building this thing. but it will do whatever I want it to.

I am currently growing northern lights x haze from seed, and they have not been sexed yet. I usually only do female seeds/clones so I have never really dealt with sexing the plants.

Any ideas on the best way to do this? assuming both plants are female (long shot), when its time to hit the clone box I want to be sure I know that I am cloning females only. I know its stressful on the plant to go from flower back to veg, but in my case it almost seems like its worth a shot? when I think they are ready to clone, I should flower them for 2 or so weeks and make sure its all good? I would have wasted enough time vegging these two already, I dont want to veg 21 clones to find out they are male.

help a girl out here living in alberta. I will use this thread to document my build. I'm glad I found this place

I have a feeling there are going to be some air flow issues with 2 - 1000 watters - most people that are running 1 - 1000 watts use at least a 6" vortex style fan. From what i have read you dont really want intake fans only exhaust. im sure disco or freezer boy will chime in
:2cents:
other than that, good luck

well honestly I haven't grown vertically in such a tight space before, and the airflow thing did concern me. but I can put my hand over the 4" exhaust port and feel plenty of flow, like more than if I stuck my face infront of an osc fan. I was after stealth more than perfect airflow. remember I have less than 60 cuft of space this is grown in though.

I'm thinking of buying those fancooled tubes for my lights too

and the way the box is designed, is its almost like the whole THING is one big carbon filter. I have the 4 fans blowing into the filter (I do have plenty of airflow coming in with just intake fans. the exhaust port is blowing) and I use the one fan on the otherside of the filter medium to help centralize the airflow. all the air rushing in the case from the bottom is essentially blowing on the filter base (which is something like 2"wide x 16"long) creating a positive pressure inside the case as the filter acts as a minor restriction. and I take advantage of this pressure increase (think below 0.1psi... im pretty sure) by creating a negative pressure on the other side, and the pressure differential helps increase flow through the filter and make sure the intake fans arent so much working (like you stick your hand in front of a pc fan, it whines up but decreases airflow) all my fans are super silent, and it sounds only like a computer is running in the room (which there is one running anyways, so you cant tell theres extra noise)

whoa, hope that makes sense at all. I put some thought into it and figured the cfm combined will clean out the air inside that 60cu ft box pretty quick

here are some pics as it is now. the vertical system isn't in place yet but just to show you the size of my unit

This will be a lot of heat for that size box. You can buy a cooltube reflector for 100$ at hydroasis.com which would streamline things a lot. right now I have a 4" vortex fan cooling a 600w in a 2'x2'x4' box and it works better than i thought it would. You could probably get away with using a 6" fan to cool the lights, along with your other fans depending on how cold it is up there. I think you will be ok though..

U said something about having a carbon filter connected to your exhaust fan? If your intake is more powerful than your exhaust then you will have positive pressure in the cab.. which just means u'l have air blowing out thru the gaps in ur box, and not flowing past the air filter.. that is unless ur box is air-tight..

it is air tight. 99.7%

is hydroasis a reputable place? I don't buy stuff online but nothing is local where I am. Buttt, I do want the aircooler cooltube things but from what ive seen they dont have 100% 360*??? I need bulbs in the center of an octagon, hitting all 360*

karynne, you shouldn't even contemplate starting a grow if fire/electrical safety isn't your #1 concern. I wonder how many months it'll be before one of your feeding lines pops out of the rocktron pebbles and spills water all over the floor, it's happened to me on several occassions, but there was never any fire risk because i keep all my electrical gear off the floor, and it's so easy to do so it's crazy when people just leave it lying on the floor. But if they wanna take such a massive gamble that's their call.

Anyway best of luck, fingers crossed you get 2 females, and grow safe! :)

oh hey im new not stupid :)

the box is incomplete, I know how to take precautions :p. just sit and watch as I go. don't take this as disregarding your comments... all comments are good and I appreciate the concern! good bunch of people you are, I know some people on the site here as I've been around the block a few times. and not in the way you are thinking pervert!

but DONT WORRY, I intent to be as safe as possible :)

my number 1 concern however, is don't get caught :D

I'm safe posting on here right? the feds wouldn't be bustin up IP addresses would they? I have never told anyone anything before, this is almost exciting :D

just wondering your thoughts on this

I have three stages in this box. the mothering - which I hope to be able to skip from this point on. the cloning, and the growing. I do not mix these stages up, so each time I do something I just reposition the lights and do what I need for each stage.

my aero clone box is 1.5ft x 2ft wide and has 28 sites, and will probably use the same 3 23watt cfl's I use for mothering two plants (as opposed to the 1000w mh/hps)

rather than building a humidity dome, I'm considering using a humidifier in the box to be used in conjunction with the intake/exhaust fans inside my relatively small box.

do you think there are any benefits in trying this? more fresh air (co2) for the plants, and I think my box is just the right size to consider it. 3x3x6 ft

plant is lookin good. i dont think you need to take so many precautions when uploading those pics. and regards to your ip address... i think they would skip over the little guys like us and be looking for people that are running a 6000+ watt room growing multiple pounds per harvest. the little guys get busted because they tell people locally and they (local pigs) start to look you up that way.

Karry you can remove the reflectors inside the cooltubes so u get 360 light,I run 3 1000 watters in 8 inch cooltubes in my stadium, one 8in vortex and some creative duct work keeps things real cool

thanks, any comments on the humidifier thing you guys? I think it should get the same net effect, but rather circulate fresh air as well.

I wonder why my one plant is smaller than the other... and also, I am thinking about flowering them within the next week or so. granted they are female, they will be cut up

im a noob but i understand that within the same strain plants can show defferent traits and growth patterns also so i wouldnt worry, just enjoy.
