Free CFL's

Was looking around and visited this site well when i left they offered me 2 free CFL's for taking like a 3 min survey like 8 questions

These things are supposed to save what 150 (conservative) a year and they last what 7 years?

So these ppl just gave me $2100 + the $10 the bulbs are worth over a 7 year stretch lol

Can you use CFL for a porch Light?

I mean the are self ballasted so if water got on the ballast wouldnt it blow o breaker?

I use CFL buds in my outside light. Granted it does have a cover and doesnt get direct rain, but does get considerable moisture. Never had a problem. I used to blow incandescent bulbs in that outside light all the time as well as in my bathroom. No issues since using the CFLs. Also the bulb would more than likely just malfunction similar to an incandescent without blowing a fuse or tripping anything I would guess. I had to replace incandescent at least every month in my bathroom from the shower, and yes I have an exhaust fan as well as a window in there I open when I shower, since putting CFLs in I havent had a failure in over a year. Peace

A while back in oz someone told me the government gave 4 free cfls to every house. I went to the post office where you pick them up and they had a mountain of boxes! No ID check or anything. You could basically get as many as you wanted. I think they were 12w warm white....kinda lame.

Actually you just mentioned 2 different CFL bulbs.

There are dimmable CFLs. These are single wattage CFLs (not 3 way) and the highest wattage I could find was a 29w CFL (100w inc equiv).

The 3 way CFL bulbs are not a good investment. You don't get as many lumens as buying a separate CFL bulb for each wattage.

Here's an example;

15/26/40 Watt CFL - 60/100/150 W Equal - Warm White 2700K
Initial Lumens: 800/1600/2450

14/19/32 Watt CFL - 40/75/150 W Equal - Full Spectrum 5100K
Initial Lumens: 450/1100/1950

somehow they call a 40w cfl and a 32w cfl both 150w incandescent equivalents?!?! and they have a difference of 500 lumens!!!!!

Even worse is when you compare them to a 42w CFL (150w incandescent equiv) that a lot of growers here use

42 Watt CFL - 150 W Equal - Warm White 2700K
Initial Lumens: 2,800

42 Watt CFL - 150 W Equal - Full Spectrum 5100K
Initial Lumens: 2,800

So not only are they lower actual wattage, 40 & 32 vs 42, but they are a lot lower in lumens, 350 lumens and 850 lumens lower!!!!

I looked at the pic they show after you finish the survey, and it shows two different bulbs, one is a 100w equivalent the other is an 80w equil. So one is like a 26 or 23w and i don't know what the other is. The pic is low res so I couldn't see any other details, but they are probably 2700k. I might throw the bigger one in a little cab with some 42w and/or 65w's for some AF's, other than that they are pretty useless for anything other than household lighting.
