I have done this. i'd put clones in rockwool into soil in red keg'r cups. veg them for a month or so then cut the bottom of the cup and into one gallon bags.... i think it kinda saves space...works well i think...

thanks GR8 for the reply. so you put a solo cup into a grow bag, neat.

so the top container and bottom container don't necessarily have to fit snug.

thanks for the info!

Hey, the one gallon on top of the three gallon should work just fine.

What I meant about the plexi glass was, I veg the plants in a pot with the bottom cut out so it was like a tube, so Id have to find a bottom for the pot. Do this so I dont have to waste a pot cause it has no bottm. Then just duct taped the plexi to the bottom so the soil wont fall out. Sorry if I wasnt clear about that.

I use 2gal. ontop of 2gal. they have a 9in. diameter, my three and 5 gal. have a 12" diameter so in 42" x 42" room I can squeeze in four extra plants.

i gotcha' now Spiral -- thanks for clearing that up for me :) sounds like a good plan!

i'm thinking when i'm ready to cut out the bottom -- i'll let the plant dry out a bit so i can easily pull it out of the container. i'll quickly cut out the bottom before putting the plant back into the now bottomless pot.

in the past anytime i've re-potted plants that's what i do, let them dry out a bit so they're easy to pull out out of the container. it doesn't seem to disturb anything.

just cut it out with the plant in it, or get another conainer with the bottom already out and just do a quick switch. no reason to move the plant more than you need to. if you use a razor knife just set the blade tip so it's out a little and cut away. i find it's easier to cut with the plant/soil in the pail, extra weight kinda help keep the knife steady.

You're right, it doesn't hurt anything, it's much better to wait til dry, seems to hold the rootball together much better than when the soil/medium is wet. It's how I prefer to transplant.

I've done this with out cutting the bottom. The roots have no problem finding their way thru the existing drain holes down into the bottom pot, that's what root naturally do. Of course, it's better to help them out by cutting the holes bigger or cut the whole bottom off, but it will still work without doing that.
Here is my next plan, Grow in soil in gallon pots, then place those pots in identical pots that have a few inches of perlite. Then the whole thing is placed in a saucer or water tight tray. You water as normal the soil, and also fill up the tray, the roots in perlite become hydro roots and the plant explodes in growth. It's a hybrid "hempy" concept.

yes pulling the plant roots and all out can put alot of stress on the plant. roots dont like light. id say go with the idea of cutting the botton out of a fresh pot, and then breaking loose your plant and just setting it in there. then you have pots with and without bottoms on hand! lets see some pics!

hey rockbud,
i do the same, i use small rocks like for an aquarium at the botton of all my pots. it promotes better drainage, i dont thow that id want my roots that deep tho. 1. tells me i need a bigger pot, 2. roots have a better chance of rotting.

I was just thinking about this very thing. I have a batch of clones going in some dixie cups and the last time I tryed a transplant the clones dint make it. So I was thinking about just cutting off the bottom and putting the dixie cup into a pot of soil. I am glad to see it works, now I dont have to be a clone killer again, lol.

I am thinking there is no transplant shock, probally the opposite it releaves root bound stress. let us know how it works????
