im not sure where to post this but im sure one of my fellow icmagers can help me out. my computers content advisor blocks out alot of sites i previously went to(thank god not ic). at first i worked around it but now it is becoming a problem. when i try and modify the setting on my content advisor it prompts me to enter a password, only i never set a password. i am the first user of this brand new laptop and i am the admin. i tried my admin password but it rejects it. can anyone tell me how to bypass this? i tried clicking on help and found and answer on how to reset my password only it listed a number of versions that excluded this solution and mine happened to be one of them. windows xp home premium. please help me correct this annoyance?

You can edit the registry to get rid of it. Be careful, modifying the registry can be VERY dangerous if you dont know what you are doing.

Try here:
hxxp://www.pchell.com/support/contentadvisor.shtml

Change the xx's to tt's

no offense but did you just push enter. if you never set a password than there isnt one. it may ask for one just push enter. if you enter something than it will say wrong password because you never set a password.

Follow these instructions STEP BY STEP!! If you have questions post them here or PM ME BEFORE continuing to the next step. Please do not attempt this ON YOUR OWN without the advisement of a technician (me being the technician for this go)

Here we go:

1) click start, run, type in REGEDIT, click ok, this opens registry editor.

2) Click + in front of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

3) + in front of SOFTWARE

4) + in front of Microsoft

5) + in front of Windows

6) + in front of Current Version

7) + in front of Policies

8) Click Ratings, look to right, Click line below Default, press delete, enter.

9) Leave default line only in right pane. Close registry editor.

10) Next click start > find > files and folders, type "ratings.pol" in top line, C: drive in the bottom, find now.

11) When this file is found, delete it.

This will remove password set, and leave content advisor fully operable. Next time, chose a password you can remember.

^^he never picked a password. i dont think he needs to do all that honestly. i got a pc floor model from a retail chain. it asked for my hp admin password and if i put in anything it would say wrong password. i pushed enter and it let me in.

yah if he didn't establish a password he can just press enter, but I guess I assumed he would have tried that.

Also, I just realized he doesn't run Windows XP, as he stated in the post, as there is no Windows XP Home Premium, I'm guessing he runs Vista Home Premium . . .

Either way, I'm a huge proponent of Firefox . . .

I advise anyone, before editing their registry, to go to File/Export (in Regedit) and save a copy of your current registry, just in case you mess up.

To be clear are you running XP or Vista? (in either case I would upgrade to Windows 7, though that is besides the point)

I believe that when you say Home Premium you actually mean XP Home Edition.

Brand new laptops ship with Vista, so he's running Vista Home Premium

I've been running Windows 7 RC for a few months now and like it, but the official release date in North America is 10/22/2009

I've been running it since 7032, that was I think the second release. I'm running the OEM version now, it is the newest and closest to the offical. (Plus it's FREE, FOREVER)

Also not all laptops run vista new, in fact most new netbooks and some notebooks run XP new.

Are you running a leaked copy of build 7032?

And I don't of any "new" laptops that are running XP, can you link me to one?

Netbooks notwithstanding, as they're not laptops . . .
