I have no idea what this thing is. What I think about the story is that kids of that age probably killed it willingly. They probably chased it out of the cave and hit it with rocks as it ran away. They probably tossed the body in the water to hide it...
Given the choice...I think it would have preferred to live.

This creature seems to have reptilian characteristics, (eyes, nose) which is why I think people are confused by it. Though the rest of the body is liken to a sloth. I can't imagine a sloth coming after humans in a menacing manner, these kids appear to be lying pieces of shit.
Did someone shave this animal, or did it just loose it's hair after dying ? weird either way. It's tognue, eyes, and nostrils aren't familar on any aniamal I've seen except a reptile, and the fact that it now has no hair makes it even stranger, but I woulnd't be surpised to find out it was a specie of sloth.
