Cannabutter Experiments: The Final Verdict?

IF you dont want your butter/milk to taste like vegetable green funk, use some sort of hash instead of vegetation in your butter/milk. A world of difference IMHO.

Ive done experiments ranging from a half hour simmering, to a full 24 hour slow cook in the crockpot. I have found that using hash/kief is the way to go to preserve the flavor or the budder, and when using hash/kief best not to cook for longer than a half hour. The 24-hour budder is actually really potent, but being much more so in the CBD/CBN department than the trippy THC department. I've found for a headier high, 1-2 hours or so in a crockpot is perfect, although it obviously varies from strain to strain and whether you use bud or trim (I use mostly bud trim and water leaf, and the smaller buds that werent worth trimming )
Also as far as water is concerned, I usually add MAYBE ~1/2 cup for every 3-4 pounds of budder (I make big batches) to help guard against burning, which has yet to be a problem so long as I keep my eyes on it. When using hash or kief, I dont add any water, as it is such a short cook time.
Never tried the preheating the material before hand, it looks like it warrents some investigation.
And as far as the milk is concerned, I agree with Haps, its one of the best ways to ingest it IMO. So tasty and refreshing and POTENT. I have the extreme pleasure of having a neighbor with a Jersey cow so I have access to fresh milk with an extremely high fat content, makes for wonderful medicinal milk. I recommend making ice cream from the milk, its quite a unique treat, and did I mention tasty?

Good nite and greetings everyone, this is a question for you guys who have the experience...I am a vegan and wanted to know if using the butter substitutes like Earth Balance is good enuff to use when makin the budder?? which is made of mostly vegetable/soy/palm oils etc. The label says its 3.5g sat fat per tblspn. Has anyone ever experimented with them?? I have around 2 oz of trim leaves(mostly sugar & popcorn) and didnt know how much budder to use. Thanks for all who reply!

if your vegan stay away from hydrogenated oils like palm and vegetable. I'd use virgin olive oil or sunflower seed oil.

Re the vegan Q - I've read that saturated fat is preferable for extraction because it's more readily digestible. Coconut oil is highly saturated - give it a whirl.

I did a test once with clarified butter, coconut oil & olive oil - same amounts of everything, same cooking technique, etc. The butter & the coconut oil were both more potent than the olive oil (not a LOT more potent, but noticeably); the butter & coconut oil were about the same potency - I couldn't really tell the difference.

Can you elaborate on your experimentation processes Haps and how you have come the methods described?

I have heard of preheating cannabis in an oven but have not tried it. I do not see a real need, the cannabis will be heated and agitated in solution for 30 mins to 3 hours anyway, baking for X time doesn't seem truly necessary.

It would seem personally that 325 degrees is too much and that smell is the result of cannabinoids like THC boiling off, as THC boils at 314 degrees F
That would imply to me that one would not want to preheat cannabis above perhaps 310 degrees F.

Thinking further though it may be a good idea to decarboxylate THC before making butter, but this depends on whether decarboxylation occurs while cooking butter, which I believe it does. Though it may be that pre-baking may be better as THC is already decarboxylated before adhering to lipids and the process will run faster, THC not having to decarboxylate in solution before adhering to lipid.

He naturally found out about decarboxylation. Its the heat that does it. THC acid degrades in all the differant cannabinoids. By decarboxylating it, you are turning chemicals that would normally be non active to weak, into strong delta 9 THC. I always do it when I make hash oil, I found out about it on the hive, its also it marijuana chemistry. I just preheat to the lowest setting, then turn it off when I put the herb in, wait 10 minutes and I'm golden.
But dont qoute me word for word.

I wonder why more people don't use coconut oil. Much healthier, stable at room temps for much longer, better range of safe cooking temps for decarboxylation (if needed) even frying. mostly medium chain triglycerides which are healthy for you, half lauric acid which has anti-viral, anti-oxidant effects. There is more to the list I am sure!

Per decarb temp. gradiants heat at 220F / 105C for an hour is useful for either extracted or honey oil based canna cococut oils. (assuming the honey oil is not decarb. already).

I've used a crockpot and didnt care for the results as much as on the stove. IMO the low setting on my slow cooker was a bit too hot. I like to keep the temp where it will simmer but take a few minutes after stirring to simmer again. I keep that process going for hours. Simmer, stir, simmer, stir..etc.. definately do not want boiling, just a few bubbles around the edge.

dont know ive always used the lil crock sauce pots the smaller ones for cheeses etc. start a batch of dro and butter before work add butter when i got back cook for a while longer and strained through (new) panty hose later that evening. most of the time ill cut that time in half but have let it go that long and only burned once cause i for got to check on it. no science but hope that can help till ya find a better way. peace....:joint:
