You would have thought that the American Government would have learned it's lesson ages ago after it tried for years to prohibit another drug called alcohol........that didn't work......

Good read anyway, just caught up with this thread....lol

Good reading for anyone interested in this topic is Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion by Gary Webb. It's excruciatingly detailed but worth the time.

Even though the war is lost the carnage goes on. Thousand of lives ruined by arrests and convictions.

The Prison/Drug Suppression cartel is a huge business employing thousand of cops and guards with big lobbbying groups. They don't want the prison population cut in half overnight. The US is world number 1 in the percentage of population in prison.

Don't forget the billions in drug money from Uncle Sam for helicopter flit=ghts, etc.

Then there is all that easy asset forfeture money that has turned small town police forces into real estate development offices.

Wow. How can our government be so foolish? We boast the most sophisticated military, economy, etc. on the international stage yet we continue to make the same mistake over and over. Targeting supply is never going to produce the effects desired; even if we spent a 1/4 of what we spend on targeting supply and allocate it towards curbing demand we would see results that would blow us all away.

What a helluva read! I can't wait for the next installment that brings us up to date on the situation since this article was first penned. The average marijuana consuming American might think we are better off under the current Presidential administration but I'm very curious to know where things stand now in relation to 5, 10, or 20 years ago.

Anybody know?? :)

Killer article for sure, and one of the bette reads I've had recently.

However, it still focuses on what our Federal Gov't can do, but guess what? It's not their job to do anything! The constitution lays out very specific jobs for the Fed Gov't, and controlling substances isn't one of them.

Until the problem is tackled from an economic standpoint, and the drugs themselves are separated from any kind of economic incentive, I truly believe we'll always be shorting those with serious health problems.

As George Soros put it, "As long as demand and profit are high, there is no way to cut off supply. There will always be large numbers of people willing to risk incarceration for the chance to make so much money." We've seen this hold true in the US, which is the most prosperous nation to ever exist, so why wouldn't it hold true for suppliers in poverty-striken nations?

I'm an embarrassed American right now. . .

So true. Drugs are really a private issue as long as there is no violence involved. Drug use should be protected under privacy laws.

Exactly, if we as a society truly believe that harmful substances should be illicit by nature, then we should throw obese people in jail. . . but that would be ridiculous, right? I don't see why drugs are any different.

I eat healthy and exercise, but happen to consume mass quantities of ganj. As far as statistics are concerned, I'll be less of a burden on society and live longer than someone who doesn't use the ganj and eats at Micky D's twice a day!

Yeah, if you eat at Micky D's twice a day, you'll be dead in a year or 6 months. Remember what happened to the dude in Super Size Me after eating there for a month . . . .

i ate my first mcdonalds 3 weeks ago

it was 5 in the morning and we where drunk and stoned and really hungry

i ordered a big mac cuz that is the best known burger

What the hell? so .....small , no......taste , i repeat , no taste

Bad meat , bad bread , just disgusting , why do people even bother spending money there?

I mean just buy REAL hamburgers or a steak some veggies and sauce and make yourself a REAL hamburger with TASTE

Holy fuckign crap , btw i didn't even finish my big mac

And for a drunk stoned person at 6 in the morning to even be able to tell something tastes bad , let alone throw it away , itells you it was really bad

Never again!!!

Oh yeah and it's unhealthy too i forgot that part

Some tremendous insight gained by reading this.
This is exactly the kind of information that should be distributed to discerning audiences, namely, us, to be used against the haters.
Thank you for bringing it to light.

Under the American Declaration of Independence and the ideals fronted by the Constitution, our government is really the kind of government that our Founding Fathers fought so hard against. No matter what their different opinions on the balance between individual, state, and federal rights, none of them would be ok with where we are living today. The new ability to shut down the internet creeps me out to no end. It makes me feel like I live in China . . .
