Old Weed?

I still have a pile of bud left from my January harvest. It's been kept cool, 100% dark, and I use Boveda packs to maintain humidity. Nice fluffy buds and they grind up great for vape.

Anyway, the flavor and buzz seems to have changed. Not as pleasant a flavor and the buzz is more body, less head now. More narcotic.

Is this typical of old bud?

In my experience buds change quite a bit over a long cure, smell, taste and high/

Yes, typical of a very long cure like that. As THC ages and breaks down it converts to CBN, changing the high.

Not as pleasant of a flavor is a matter of opinion, some prefer it that way.. The high too.

THC degradation... I'm sure is happening. Too bad we can't figure out a way to preserve better.

Thanks for offering that.

if its an oxygen free container it should store (almost the same) for a longgggg time (over a year easy).

oxygen in the jar (even if a small amount) will cause molecular changes.

thc is thc, cbd breaks down into cbn (iirc)

cbd=narcotic stone
cbn=degraded form of cbd that lacks the effects.

if its just got a different bouquet to it, yet it still looks healthy to smoke, i.e. no mold. then yeah go for it.

Thanks for that helpful answer ourcee.

So O2 is blamed for the degradation. So a vac-bag or a Nitrogen injection (like wine bottles use) would keep weed OK for longer?

Are these things done often? Removing O2, that is. Freezing is a common practice, but anything in the freezer can dry, Trichs fall off, etc.

It would seem that CO2 or Nitrogen (very inert gas) in the dark at room temp woyld work, if indeed O2 is the culprit

I have excellent luck using the Foodsaver Vac sealer. They have special jars and you can evacuate all the air. (Using the bags will crush all the buds and make it look like brickweed.) Been using the jars for a few years now.

While it is hard to say for sure that there is no decline in effects or taste. I can barely tell the difference after a year plus.

I will check them out for next harvest. That sounds like the easiest good answer. Thanks for that !

Different strains react differently too.
Some degenerate in 3-4 months, while some others are just coming into their own w/ that length of cure.

If you dislike what you have now, I'd turn it to hash, and next time seal 'em up good! :smoke:

Thanks HighL. I have them sealed in airtight mason jars all this time, with humidity packs. I'm looking to vac seal the remaining and slow the process.

foodsaver makes an accessory vacuum lid sealing doohickey for $10.

Sucks the air out of the mason jars and then on to the next mason jar.

My bro is about to start carrying a machine called the Mini Pack Torre. It is a chamber sealer that sucks the air out of your pound and then injects nitrogen into it. They call it gas flush. I have heard of pounds being kept fresh for over two years when sealed like this and they look like they have just been harvested too. They are used in the food sealing industry. They are not cheap, $4000 plus but I am getting one this fall and will give a report. Most of the lbs you see coming out of BC these days are sealed with these machines. They use a cool square bag that sits perfectly on a triple beam.
