You dont have to wire a cool tube. I ONLY use HTG since they are right down the road, and I have 10 cool tubes from them. Hang it, screw in light, hang hangers, plug into ballast. Cant really beat that. I use their digital greenhouse ballasts too. And IMVHO the cool tubes are the bees knees. I got an 8k flowering room, and with he cool tubes I can run the lights lil over a foot from the plants....good shit. I dont do hoods...too many issues.

And since it seems you are kinda making this WAY harder than it is, you can also JUST buy the socket and 15ft cord too. Get ANY ballast and hood, or just hang the bulbs vert.

But a noob asking for advice, and then getting pissy like in post#18, your not looking to get much more help on these boards. Have tact man....get a lot farther.

good vibes

WHISKEY,you mention the cooltube, that you can just plug it into the ballast..thats my whole poitn of this thread..i already know that you can plug a cooltube into most ballasts, such as lumatek, galaxy, hell even the digital grenhouse you have can do thi..but my htg supply 400 hps ballast has the lgiht socket BUILT in..there is nothing to plug in..my question is,can you still use the cooltube with my ballast,or does it HAVE to be a ballast that you can just plug it in?...

i know the easycool accepts htg supply ballasts..but id like to buy eitehr the cooltube or euro..i jsut need to know if i can use them with my ballast..and na am not pissy man..i just really dont like smart ass comments like that..if you dont have nothing good to say..dont say it all..you get me? i like respect, just like the next man..

I know that I can just unscrew it and remove ti from the open air reflector..but AFTER that, what doI do..do I just screw the socket into the new reflector and screw it in place..is this possible,if so,with waht reflector..can it work with the cooltube..the thing is I se that some reflcetor already brng the socket..is it possible to just remove the socket that comes with it,and screw it the one fro my ballast?...

please help..also WHAT reflector from htg can I do this with.i just need an exact answer so i an buy it..

On the new reflector (whichever one you choose), open that "box", undo the wires so you can take the cord off, and wire in the cord to your ballast. Since you will have to remove the cord/socket from the old reflector then theoretically you can use any hood you want, since you'll have to wire your ballast to.
Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do?
Here's a pic of ow I wired a cheapie no name hood with a cord from a Sunsystem's ballast.
Let me get this straight, your ballast and current reflector are permanently attached together, RIGHT?
You could also cut the cord close to the hood your using and then open the box on whatever hood you buy and undo the cord that's attached and wire in your ballast.
WARNING!!! WARNING!!!
Make sure all the wiring is attached firmly! Use electrical tape if/when needed but make sure your wires are connected to each other tightly! A fire will definitely make you wish you went out and bought a new hood AND ballast instead of rigging one together...

i would really just give htg a call or email there services are great i think they would answer your question 100% for ya lol. considering they prolly get the same question all the time. that how i think you setup the reflector but i havent ordered new reflector yet. im stuck with some crappy one on a 400. in the near future ill be getting 1000 with easycool6 or airoflow cant decide yet =].sorry i cant give you 100% answer but i dont wanna tell you i know for sure and you have problems when you receive it

and i know what ya mean on the htg 400w how the wire is. a buddy of mine has one. the cord is fixed into the ballast

None of this is going to do you any good if you cant vent it outside your grow space. You need a physical barrier between the space you are growing in and the space you are venting too. Really, if you arent willing to cut holes or build a cabniet, id forget about the whole air cooled hood thing. It wont do you any good to vent it to the top of the closet or to open the closet door and vent it into your bedroom with the doors open.

Just to be clear to the OPs question, the issue of compatability is with the cord from the ballast to the mogul bas. The lamp cord.

The cords all hook up to the mogul base the same way and those are generic. It is the plug into the ballast that is proprietary.

If you are looking for a Sun Systems cord, you can also get those individually at several dealers online for about $15. Sun Systems also sells mogul bases pre-wired with their cords for about $40.

Yes, oyuy could unscrew one mogul base fomr a reflector and swap another in. That would work as long as the lamp cord attached to the one you swap in is compatible with your ballast. Alternatively, you could leave the mogul base in the reflector and just swap the cord.

Point is - it's the cord that matters.

And most of their hoods/reflectors come with a pre-wired mogul base, and all of those work with their Sun Systems Magnetic ballasts as well as Sun Systems' electronic ballast line (Galaxy).

His cord is hard wired to the ballast. The only way it's coming off is by cutting or opening up the ballast. It is not plugged into the ballast. His ballast/hood are WIRED together, not plugged. So if he wants to use a different hood, any type of hood, he will have to swap out the mogul base.
