I've got a police scanner in my car, mainly to listen to cHP cause man, it suuuure is nice to hear shit like "ok base I'm hiding in the bushes at mile marker 73" when you're out speeding like a motherfucker.

Very true! Even a Passport or Valentine leaves much to be desired against a well placed patrol with laser

I have been watching the GNU Radio prices fall and would love to have a software defined wide band scanner for mobile kit. The USRP2 could handle it with ease in stand-alone mode and there are front ends available in the bands required.

While listening to these channels is kinda cool, it won't do you any good as for your own security, all the narcotics and surveillance/swat channels are digitally encrypted.

Wow, fucking "A" man this is cool, always wanted to get a scanner, now I don't need to.
Question, what does "trunked" mean? For my state, I can listen to the county sheriffs office, fire, and ems, or the other link says it is a "trunked" and it's from another city, sounded like Highway patrol or something. I also know that one of the other cities that I lived in, you could not use a scanner to listen to the fuzz for some reason, had something to do w/ the digital or trunked something or another. Anyone know?

A trunked radio system is a complex type of computer-controlled radio system. Trunked systems use a few channels (the actual frequencies), and can have virtually unlimited talk groups. trunked systems are basically used in larger cities it basically controls the flow of radio traffic so people are not talking over each other

Digital is basically Like a digital TV signal but many places do not have digital equipment or have stopped using it because of signal strength and poor radio reception. you need to have a scanner capable of digital it is usually a plug in card that goes into the scanner.
