Finding dolomite lime

I am having the hardest time finding this stuff locally. I try to avoid online purchasing when it isn't absolutely required, and I can't believe that I can't find this stuff. I've been to Lowes, Home Depot, True Value (with a huge gardening department), 2 nursuries and that high-end craptastic store in the mall: Smith & Hawkins. The only stuff I've been able to find is Espoma Garden Lime which is pelleted. This stuff: http://www.amazon.com/Espoma-Organic-Traditions-Garden-Lime/dp/B000BWZAQQ/ref=combo_pack_i_2

Help!

Farm supply and feed stores usually have everything you need. Nurseries can be great, too, especially local ones. Ask around town. Even when I lived in Los Angeles I had access to nurseries and farm stores. There has to be something in your area. Good luck!

You have to ask. But any garden store should be able to order it for you trust me, just be polite. This stuff is heavy and bulky to ship and most soils these days have enough in it already for common plants. Even the popular hydro shop I go to doesn't stock it on the shelves I have to get them to order it for me. Or if you're somewhere rural you can ask a farmer or a good gardener. They got that shit by the barrel full.

Don't forget to look in the cement/concrete area while at lowes/homedepot.

Its(lime)is also used in stucco and some concrete mixes.

Yep, Lowes/Home Depot back by the concrete, it's $3 or so. Have to look around for it, it's not usually outdoors due to the fact that it cakes up with moisture. If you live in Eastern US, can also try Agway--they have EVERYTHING!

Maybe I should wander around one of those big-box hardware places sometime. Are they cheaper? Over ten years ago, I kept being disappointed by them (never could find everything at one place, like HD would have fluorescent bulbs, but not fixtures,) while my local place always had everything I needed. I just got into the routine of getting to know the smaller shops and the people who run them. There is a certain warmth you get from a place where, even if you're not known, you are at least recognized.

The only chain in California to give me that experience is OSH.

I second Agway on the East Coast. They've got everything a grower could possibly need.

Agway ROCKS! They are a one stop shop for peeps like us. HD and Lowe's have stuff seasonally, and you can always get the odd item or two for cheaper. I hit them first, then save Agway for the rest. Agway has 25 pound bags of worm castings, no guano tho.

Strange. I am in a major metropolitan area on the east coast and I've never heard of Agway before!

I guess I'll try heading back to Lowes and see what they have in the cement area. Is there anything that I should be wary of? I'd hate to buy some powdered lime in the cement area and then learn that it isn't at all appropriate for soil-based gardening. . . .

The stuff by cement is quicklime. I believe quicklime is phytotoxic. I use espoma garden lime, which is dolomite lime, as a soil amendment, and it works well.

Good point. Be careful that you get 'Agricultural Lime' not quicklime!! All limes are not created equal. Some places keep the lime near the concrete mixes as none of it can get wet, some keep it with the lawn and garden stuff. Be careful which one you get! Several Home Depot's I've been all have 'em, Lowe's seems hit or miss.

There is an Agway in the Bronx...the Bronx!!! Never been there but searched for NYC and found that one. They seem to be everywhere out here.

It also may depend on where you live. If you're in an area with alkaline soil, you're going to have a harder time finding garden lime. Your best bet then would probably be one of the big box stores' websites.
