I count from the first day of 12/12. I can always tell the sex of my seed plants well before they go under 12/12 lighting.

if you veg long enough they do show pre sex flowers, i havent got a microscope yet. it taken about 12 days of 12/12 befor any white hairs started to show so will it take 8 weeks or 10 weeks im currently in week 6 from when i 1st started the 12/12

Has to be from the time you flip.
Otherwise, where is your term of reference? Everyone would start counting at a different point. There would be no baseline.

I vote with Expat. Some plants show flower in a week, some in a month. Beyond that, "finished" is entirely subjective.

Yup, I'm with Expat too. If we started counting from the flowers showing, we'd have to allow for variations in different peoples' abilities to see preflowers. I know mine is high. I'm able to sex them earlier (which is odd, because my eyesight is getting worse!) than other growers, even if they've had a few years experience.

It's a test of the skill of the grower to keep plants healthy and happy into advanced flowering, so I've always viewed the finishing time listed for a strain as a challenge to try and 'top it'. Almost everything tastes better if you put a few more weeks of (healthy) flowering time on it.

If you count 12 days from the time you flip and you don't see any hairs, but on day 13 you start to see hairs forming does that mean that those hairs are 12 days old or are they two days old? It makes absolutely no sense to count days from the first day of flip if the buds haven't even starting forming yet don't you think? It's like spending money you haven't made yet; yes you can do it, but you will be coming up short in the end.

The only reason for starting from the flip is simple; Starting at any other time is too subjective.

no, it makes complete sense. we are talking about a requirement that the plant experience X amount of weeks of a certain type of condition (photo period shorter). After X amount of that, the plant is 'finished.'

First sign of sex, be it hairs or balls that's day 1

what??? Almost every plant ive grown has shown sex under 24hr lighting within a month or so. So by that theory i should start counting at say week 5 of veg, i veg em another 3weeks so by then according to this they would be 21 days into flowering under 24hrs of light??? NOPE

ya start counting the day you flip your lights to 12/12...its just that easy and its been done that way for years and years and years and years and years!

still2big, your plants are flowering from stress. Probably rootbound, that's the most common cause of 'auto flowering' when they don't actually have the AF genes.

When plants reach a certain age in veg they become mature.. they throw hairs and or balls they donot begin to flower they just show sex....

What exactly is the purpose of counting days? Wouldn't you know the best time to call it quits by examining the development of the trichomes? Microscopes aside, I've been able to use a good magnifying glass to view trikes in medicinal shops, and can tell there are differences.

This is a very interesting question, I figured that flowering time would begin when flowers started to show, i.e. balls or pistils.

If you start a seed under 12/12 lighting, is the recommended flowering time still the same or is the seedling "vegging" under flowering photoperiod.

I ask because I just started a 12/12 from seed grow just to see what happens. I grew a previous seed with 2&1/2 weeks veg and it was finished in 43 days from the time pistils showed (G13 Labs Gigabud - rec. flower time 35 - 45 days) but for the 12/12 I can't see it finished in another 20 days, it has been above ground for 19 days so far.
