Smallest area for a 600watt

Whats the smallest area i can fit a 600 watt hps, while being able to maintain temps at 5-8 degrees above ambient, while using a cooltube or air cooled hood?

I have mine in a 3 x 5 area on a super sun 2 reflector air cooled hood. I also have an exhaust when temps get above 79f. My temps stay around 7-10 degrees above ambient temp. You need an exhaust or ac.

I was possible thinking about doing independent cooling for the fan and the cab, one stanley blower cooling the light and another stanley exhausting the air from the cab through a scrubber

in a small area my 600w was less productive than my 430w. the 600w is much brighter, more lumens, but the increased heat diminished yield and quality. the 600 digi now sits on the shelf.

running the maximum amt of light, and the associated heat, requires much greater air movement, or cooling. running my air through the room too quick caused cupping of leaves as the humidity decreased.

i dunno you could try 600. but with a 400 digi you could run both hps and mh, the bulbs are way cheaper and avail at homo depo. the more fans gonna give you more noise too if its an issue.

nice thread, perfect for my Q...I've got two 400 watters in a 2 1/2' X 3' and I am pretty sure I want to move down to a digi 600....I think the digi 600 would actually increase my yield.....What do you all think? Thanks

you almost have to try both to see. environments vary i suppose

Nothing is in stone yet, maybe ill do the 600, maybe 400 with cfls or maybe 2 250 Cmh. Heat is the biggest issue so ill have to design my cab/closet around that.

Make sure you design it for summer grows...this way you cover all issues regarding heat and circulation.

Great point...I have a 600w inna closet space and it tends to get pretty warm in there if i dont run the air during the summer months. Cant wait for the fall temps to arrive. Its so much easier to keep a nice enviroment for the plants with less energy used.

I'm not sure i would be able to run a summer grow with out AC and that starts to get on the expensive side. I started out thinking i would build a grow cab around a 600 watt light but now im re-thinking it and building the cab around ventilation and plenty of it, it gets hot where im going.

i run a 600W hps in a wardrobe style cabinet. 48''x20''x72''. air is sucked through holes in bottom, through dust filter, cooltube, 6'' vortex, then pushed out carbon filter outside cab. temp with lights on is 4-7 degrees F above ambient depending on fan speed. i get great results. hope this helps.

Smallest area for a 600w HID IMO would be 3' x 3' or 9 square feet.

600/9 = 66.66w per square foot.

90,000/9 = 10,000 lumens per square foot.

6" 309-440cfm inline centrifugal exhuast fan.

As far as keeping the temps 5-8 degrees above ambient....well it would help if you told us what the ambient temps are.

Damn dude, 123 wpsf, lol. I'd try the 600, it might be easier on your plants to the point where it increases production. But hell dude, I don't know.

Go for 3x3, Jgrow.

I would say go no more than 10-12,000 lumen psqft. If you can keep it cool you dont have much to worry about. Thats about max light a plant can process before bleaching occurs. So run the numbers on your bulb and size your cab accordingly.

I was planning a 3x3 space but i need it to be stealth, most closets are not 3x3 so this wouldn't work, i haven't been able to find a cabinet or storage cab with 3x3 dimensions yet and i feel if i build a 3x3 box it will not be stealth like say a large dresser or storage cab. Does anybody have ideas on a stealth 3x3 set up? One of the places im looking at has a "walk in closet" in the master bedroom which might mean i could fit it in there but of course they don't have the specs of the closets online, im going to call today and see what they say.

As far as my ambient temps during the cooler months its low 70s and in the warmer months it around 90, hence probably not running a grow during the summer cause ac is expensive.

Jgrow-Do you have a Home Depot or Lowe's in your area?

If so you might want to look at the line of pre-fab wardrobe closets they cary by Closetmaid. They are basiclly mocks of the Mills Pride line and they have a cab that I think would be perfect for a 400 or 600w HPS depending on how you want to grow.

This one measures 48" w x 20.5" d x 71.25" h.

It only = 6.83 square feet and would give you 87.84w per square foot and 13177 lumens per square foot (this does not take into consideration at what height the lamp will be hung as that plays a role in your lumens per square foot.

With proper ventilation and air-cooling of the light I don't see a 600w HPS being too much of a problem as long as you can keep ambient temps in check.Best thing to do is route all exhuast to the attic or a nother room because if you dump the hot exhuast air into the room the grow cab/tent/box sits in you'll just be heating the air in that room up and therefore the ambient temps would go up causing the temps in the grow to go up aswell.

A 6" inline centrifugal exhuast fan that is rated 392-440cfm matched to a carbon filter that is equal to a Can 50 filter would allow for about 300cfm of effective airflow after attaching the filter.

I have looked into those pre-fab set ups from home depot but its just not big enough for a 600, i wouldn't be able to keep the temps in check and id really like to have as much space as i could get, i wont be able to fit what i want in 6.8 sq feet, i need that 9. On to the venting into another room, since this will be in my apartment with no attic that's out, and i cant cut holes in the wall to vent other places, i might try to vent out a window but not sure how it would be possible.

I'm also considering getting an 8" inline instead of a 6". Reason being at around 300cfm ill keep my temps at 5-7 degrees above ambient which is acceptable but that's going to be running the fan at full speed, i need to be able to turn the fan down so i can get an acceptable noise level for the fan.

Oh, I think you can manage a 600 just fine in one of those...
I have a 400CMH /150HPS in one half of one.
AC unit + 2 Stanley Blower DIYs in the attic. One pulls on flower, the other pulls on veg then exhausts the AC.
My temps are typically 64-68 at root zone, 75-85 above canopy.
The only problem with such a small set-up is that you need to keep the leaves out of the lights burn zone. Bout as much work as a scrog really.

get a tent if you can afford it. i built my own box (3.5' x 3.5' x 4.5') with 2 x 3's and black and white 6 mil poly for around $50-60. I have a electronic 400w aircooled HPS. temps run 5-8* higher. my box can still be taken down in about a hour or so but a tent would be much quicker and less to build but looking at around $250. good luck

CMH runs WAY cooler than a 600W hps, I have one in a closet that barely has a fan on it (little crappy inline booster), but for my 600, I have a 6" inline fan cranking away. I have the 600 in a tent that's less than 3'x5'. It had a cool tube on it which I ditched in favor of a magnum xxxl because of the cooltube's hotspot.
