Wanted to ask if there are any tricks of the trade to getting ripe melons in zone 5.

I'm in, like, zone 23 I think here in SoKal so I don't know how much my 2 cents are worth. Our problem here is powdery mildew. I've gotten much better luck with direct seeding watermelons than transplanting them. Seems like the direct seeded ones are more resistant to the PM. Also, a drip system works much better than hand watering not only because watermelons need lots of water (especially in our sandy soil), but because it keeps the PM down.
