Mexico Moves To Decriminalize Minor Drug Use

C

Chamba

does this law apply to all people in Mexico..or only Mexican citizens?

I wonder why there aren't news reports of millions of Americans crossing the southern border to sample the same ganja freedom you can get in Holland? it all seems so low key, why is that?

man... this is like the fourth time on icmag i see this news in the past several months...

lets get this clear people, if you get caught with drugs, you will still get fucked, it will all depend on whether the cop wants to take you in or let you go (that is, get bribed).

here in venezuela, since a few years ago already, it has been written and approved in the law the matters in relation to amounts considered as personal consumption, for cannabis up to 20grams is considered personal and not criminal, yet, you still get sent to rehab, just like in the mexican law. it does not matter if they catch you once or twice or three times, if you can bribe the cop, you will always go free, but if not, you catch a case.

so do not go to mexico and think you can walk around smoking a joint, you will get in serious trouble if you do.

and if you are found buying, shit hits the fan too, there is no tolerance for that.

IMO, the only thing the Mexican police and authorities have zero tolerance for, is you not having any money to give them when they detain you. The laws you are breaking are of a second level, and not the pertinent issue.

In Juarez, if you drive a rental car, you better hope it looks like a Federali ride, or else you are in for some surprises. The locals will ram you, and even if you have incurance you will be detained for 24 hours to make sure that the Mexican citizen that you so rudely let run into you, will get their payola.

And the cops will pull you over because they figure you have been told to slip them a 20 if they pull you over no questions asked. And if you don't...24 hours in Juarez lockup.

A gringo does not want to spend 2 hours let alone 24 in the Juarez lockup.

Mexican authorities are corrupt from top to bottom, and nobody can produce any evidence of that being likewise.
We can discuss the laws and legislature of Mexico all we want, but it has little to do with the streets. And the Mexican cops are corrupt...as are their people as a whole.

Sorry, but facts are facts. Sad as they may be.

I read on Cnn that they made the decision to turn it over to the 3rd time you are sent to rehab.

just what i said...

if you get caught and have no money to pay them, it does not matter if there is a law that talks about personal amounts or any other stuff... for a cop out here, to detain you and get cash out of you is the job description.

so that being said, do not walk around mexico smoking a j thinking you can get away with it because it is your first time or because it is a small joint not over 2grams or whatever...

be safe

Yo Paz, have you been to Mex...? I would assume so, but had to ask.... Believe me, they have bigger probs than hassling Smot Pokers.... That's Minors.

The Gov't is making a point to not encourage "Drug Tourists." I think they are more concerned with people looking for hard drugs, but I would not recommend blowing the smoke at a Federale..>! Or travelling with more than a little bit, if any.

Discretion will always be smart in Mex. People need cash, it;s obvious. But, Surely this will loosen up some things...

it points out that they need to do something.. It isn't going away..

Myself I'm fine with stopping at cannabis but Mexico must have much bigger issues with it's drug industry..

Still illegal to grow, sell; somehow if it shows up in my pocket and is under 5 grams then they take it and send me on my way.. I like that better than prison.

Does anyboby notice the irony that it is now legal to go to Mexico to get high yet it is too dangerous to do so because of the cartels fighting over illegal drugs?

What's the common denominator that's the flaw in that?

It's the illegalness of drugs.

Remove the prohibition and all problems are solved.

VTA has this other thread about latin america moving to legalize. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=132740

I have read threads about the U.N. suggesting decriminalization too.

If mexico and all of latin america pretty much end there drug wars, then all the violence will be then concentrated on the places where the drug war still exist. Which will be western nations. mostly border states like texas and california.

our only choices will be to take the war to them on a much larger scale, or to decriminalize as well. I bet they go to war again first. This nation's ego is too big to admit failure.

I am deffo an activist. I take risks daily, and for years. But, you Militant guys can go to war with the Oldsters... It's all "You."

And thanks for doing it...! Sincerely...

Me, I tire of all the divisiveness brought on by the issue. You should see it up here...! Talk about a "Culture War...!" Gonna go somewhere safer, calmer, more healthy... But not Mex.... I will find another place,or even a tropical island where I can at least grow indica hybrids...! lol

I used to travel to Mex yearly, but have not returned since the Ununiformed temporary Rent-a-Killer called an Army Dude or whatever, pointed his machine-gun at me, just for fun. Or, maybe he smelled some pot on me, I had just toked in my room. And it was mediocre pot. NOT WORTH it...!! haha

Decided never to return, although I love the people, the Surf, the food, the weather.. The proximity, the exoticness. The friendly and Beautiful women. Sheesh, get it together Mex., and I will come back..>!

One CANNOT give an 'officer' the chance to crucify one...

Although, I was stupid years ago, smoking a joint on a backstreet, near a club at night, only to have two headlights FLASH on directly in front of us..>!!! My friend PITCHED the small roach (why did they not come after us sooner, I don;t know). They searched for the roach in the darkness. Luckilly,he had tossed it hard enuf that the hots fell off, and by the time they wewre looking for it, had burned out.... THANK GOD FOR A CRAPPY FLUSH...!!!! hahahah, that joint just wouldn;t stay lit, I guess...

Then they searched us thouroughly, & found nothing. I spoke in spanish as well as I could, to not appear as a victim, that
"We had nothing.. Sir....."He shoved my friends fingers in my nose, sCHMUCK, and made me smell them, haha
"Que es esto..?!!' He yelled at me..

They were COMICALLY visibly terrified of my ALTOIDS, haha... I couldn;t help smirking in the dark at that...

Frustrated, the younger, angry cop said "LET'S GO..!" and I shat almost right then. There was an ounce in the room, and I thought he would want to go there. Turned out, "Let's GO" meant "Get outta Here," which I happily obliged him. To disappear in the night, and consider how STUPID we had been.

That is just one story, a couple friends have a couple more. More heinous than mine.

Never smoke on the street, even the beach, except in CERTAIN locations that are safe for that. Yelapa, for one.

Don;t even let people smell it in the air, or on you.

HOWEVER< Let me grow, and I would consider staying. Mexico is filled with AWESOME people.

shit rag SD tribune (via The Associated Press) article

"Now they will go because they can get drugs," said San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne. "For a country that has experienced thousands of deaths from warring drug cartels for many years, it defies logic why they would pass a law that will clearly encourage drug use."

Um, because it's not that drugs are harmful, it's because the illegalness of drugs are harmful!!!!!!!

Every old lady in Nogales is sitting on a blanket on the sidewalk selling penis-shaped pipes and Chiclets. Now they'll be selling coke spoons and points.
I don't see how this is going to help( I get the not going to jail over a little weed thing of course) with meth coke and heroin. Every alley and corner will have a mexican standing there and under every rock near him will be a 'legal' amount of crank, or smack, or whatever. Pay him and he'll point to a rock, you go get it and he doesn't transfer anything to you himself. Good for hash business, but too easy for hard drugs to be made more available. I guess they do that now anyway. i don't know, i'm just paranoid of a bunch of dopers being more emboldened.

Actually in countries that have some sort of decriminalization, hard drug use is down.Drugs are readily available in the us, so making a trip to mexico for a spec of meth, heroine is really a moot point. I doubt anymore people than the current would sell illegal drugs, but in their case they are legal but come with a heavy charge dealing them. Why would a local risk their freedom to peddle a spec of drug with very little return. If the hard drugs you can receive in tourist areas of mexico are as bad as the pot,why even bother.

Amazing how people fall for the line of propaganda espoused in hazy's post. Why do you worry about such bullcrap? Why are your irrational fears relevant to anything? Prohibition has failed miserably.
