Using Soda Cans As Growing Container?

Hi guys ive got a great idea for growing small plants for stealth/space reasons. Well im growing in a C13 cabinet im sure most of you have seen these. Mine is separated into 2 flowering chambers with a 250w hps in each and a computer fan in each chamber near the light blowing out the hot air. What i want to do is cut the tops off soda cans fill them with soil and use these pots. My Idea is that this will restrain the plant growth to 1-2' which is perfect for my growing chambers. Im also gonna do a massive sea of green im gonna put the cans back to back and fit as many plants in each C13 chamber as i can im estimating 50+ small plants per chamber. Im gonna start out on a 12/12 straight from seed light schedule. Id like some comments and suggests please.

There are better things to use than aluminium for all kinds of reasons. Call me unconventional, but I'd use square plastic pots.

i cut off the tops then bend the top of the can down and crimp it with plyers to make the cans/pots safe. Ill take some pictures when i get home from work tonight to give u guys an idea of what im doing

Ok, I really don't believe aluminum hurts the plant seeings how Ive seen aluminum pots sold all over the place and Ive seen a lot of ppl using aluminum coffee pots and such so lets forget that. Using a 12oz can as a container, and starting the plants on a 12/12 light schedule from seed, with a econo 250w hps about 8 inches from the top leaves, how tall will the plants get? How much bud will each produce. How long will it take until i see the first signs of sex on a 12/12 light schedule from seed in 12oz cans? and how long until final harvest. If anyone wants to take an estimated guess please feel free to post their thoughts. Lets keep this thread going I see a big future in growing cannabis in small containers for stealth and micro growing reasons.

Why would you choose Aluminum cans? There are so many other better choices when considering a home for your plants. The metal will insulate heat, the roots won't like that.
I prefer using Gatorade bottles. Plastic 20oz soda bottles or 1 liter plastic soda bottles work just as well. Big Red is a good brand cause of the shape. Coke, or similar type bottles whose shape isn't consistently the same from top to bottom i would stay away from, small patches of soil within could stay dry due to irregularly shaped design.
But i prefer 20oz or 32oz gatorade bottles, I cut the tops off where it starts to taper toward the mouth piece.

I use 20oz bottles when i want to transplant to bigger pots.
If I was gonna use one pot for whole grow I would go with the 32oz bottles.

You may also want to try coco and perlite mix, Coco usually does better than soil in small containers, the roots seem to like it better. Maybe do a test.

I like to start seeds in Faygo 20oz's and then transplant the females into 2L bottles, since they are both cylinders. So "Send your momma straight up to the store, tell that ***** to bring home a Faygo"

I also wanted to mention im using very cheap scotts potting soil with a 1:4 ratio of permilite added and may not be able to afford fertilizer of any sort (unless its very cheap like $5-10). What will happen if i grow without fertilizer? The Scotts potting soil bag says it will support plants for 4 months, my plants entire life span will only be 2-3 months. Advice needed....

The key to growing good pot is trail and error. You can get all the information you need, but you won't learn a thing until you make the mistakes for yourself.

how tall will the plants get?

Strain dependant. Most of the time LST or some form of tying is needed

How much bud will each produce.

Strain dependant. Depends also on amount of nutes, lights, and plants conditions.

How long will it take until i see the first signs of sex

Strain dependant. Usually 2 weeks give or take a few days.

how long until final harvest.

Strain dependant. Depends also on how you want your bud. Couchlock feeling takes a little longer than that clear uppidy high

yea i want the couchlike high. i also know alot about trichomes and have a little radioshack 60-100x microscope that ive used to determine trichome maturity in previous harvests. using the 12 oz can, with a 12/12 light cycle from seed, can anyone estimate how long it will take to harvest. (I already know the strains may differ but im using bagseed from some good skunky mids and i just want an estimate).

Someone may have had a shot at giving you an estimate if the strain was known. because they may have already tried it etc.. but bagseed.. anything anyone says would be a complete guess.

Fiji water bottles 20 oz square ones, pack in nicely and the water is good, just wrap them so you don't get algae.

I am kinda in the same boat as you are, will be setting up my own SOG using CFL's in a few computer cases.

I would advise plastic as well. but perhaps you should try some metal, some plastic, and report any changes.
