remember nori is pressed and toasted laver, not kelp. I am unsure of it's nutritional content but no doubt it is high in K and iodine.

If you want seaweed, any seaweed, and are asking at food places, any of these might work: wakame, hijiki, kombu, etc... chinese kombu is very cheap, but the japanese stuff is very expensive. Hijiki would be the easiest to work with as you could just mix it in. wakame expands a lot when it gets wet.

for an interesting adventure, try the cookbook "washoku" by elizabeth andoh. it's worth it just for the kabocha with adzuki beans recipe. Which uses kelp, by the way.

a nori sheet is basically paper made from seaweed paste. There is not a lot in there. If you like miso soup, by the way, al you need is kombu (kelp), dried bonito flakes, and some miso. Wakame is optional.

mj is pretty much exactly like corn and tobacco. Everything you can grow with ammonium nitrate, you can grow better with organics.

I have some corn growing in straight city compost on top of cardboard, and guess what it needs? K. Stems are a bit brittle. Next year it will get some kelp. I live near the ocean, so I can do that cheap, and there should be cheap local alternatives for you, too. You just might have to compost it before you use it, that's all. Something to look into now, before you run out of nori.

Kelp is not the only source of K and micronutrients out there, just the most convenient one for most.

If you can buy a lb. of the seaweed extract powder for 13.99 plus shipping, this is enough for your plants for a couple of years worth in most instances as you're only using micro-amounts. This would be the cheapest way in terms of bang for your buck. You can get liquid products like maxicrop but they will be more expensive.

Remember, you want cold-processed ascophyllum nodosum.
The product that CT Guy is recommending is the industry standard and is used by companies like Neptune's out of Maine. I talked with their factory rep at a trade show last weekend and he confirmed that the seaweed extract used in their products is out of Nova Scotia (i.e. Acadian Seaplants Seaweed Extract) which is a cold-pressed ascophyllum nodosum.

The suggested rate of application is 1.5 tsp. per gallon of water for foliar. I use that same amount as a soil drench. This means that 1 lb. will give you approximately 64 gallons of 'kelp extract' - pretty cheap money. Far less money than using Japanese kelp food products.

If you live in an area where livestock is raised, then the farm stores or feed stores will carry kelp meal as it's used for maintaining the health of animals. It's also used as part of a poultry feed.

There are several national fertilizer companies whose products are sold at mainstream nursery centers (like E. B. Stone, Espoma, et al) which have kelp meal packs which usually runs about $2.25 per lb. (more or less).

well, at the price you paid, I think clack has a very good point. those 100 sheets don't translate into that much seaweed. fuck me, just listen to clack next time.

I would use it to get started but either follow his advice or start composting bananas and kiwis (do it outside or you will get fruit fly invasion).

you country boys know more than you let on, in my experience...

dude, you gotta make sushi now. You won't regret it.

got any slaughterhouses nearby? you could ask them where all the blood goes, maybe they dry it themselves? don't know, but it's worth a shot. If you get creative, this stuff is around, especially in the country. I'm pretty sure blood meal doesn't come from cities.

your grow is going to take a while from seeds, so yort has a point. You are good to go just use liquid nutes for now. And if you want to spend time with your mom or grandmother, make a worm bin bag with her. It involves some sewing, but the result is you put food in the top and get EWC from the bottom. Basically it shits EWC.

CT Guy

Please buy the Acadian stuff, it's well worth the money and like CC already mentioned, a little goes a long way. Much much further than any sushi wraps and much better for your plant. If you live in N. America, that's the product you want.

I've done some real basic testing with other kelps like a Pacific Bull Kelp that was harvested from near our area in the Northwest and got horrible results in regards to microbial growth in tea (not to say that it doesn't have the other benefits of seaweed).

But in all honesty, there really isn't much cheaper amendments or bang for your buck, just the amount you've spent on driving would more than have paid for the shipping alone.

Good luck!
