Fungus Gnats and Mosquito Dunks

My buddy keeps telling me about Diatomacious Earth, suppose to slice the legs right off them little bugger! Could you imagine being the size of a gnat and having to walk thru a field of razor blades! OuCH!

EDIT: i haven't tried the stuff myself but the old timer that told me swears by it!

I dont have a PPM meter so I cant check myself, but im wondering if it would spike the PH or PPM when soaked in a gallon of water.
I once put four dunks in a 100 gallon reservoir of plain water for 72 hours and the ppm didn't change.
Having one in a gallon of water would be more than 100x the standard application rate.

i have used Gnatrol and it worked for about two weeks before the next generation hatched.

i have pretty much given up on trying to get rid of these fucks.

i have to teardown the grow anyways so i am hoping a fresh restart will do the trick.

OP: What does the Floramite have in it to kill? Maybe I can find the same thing under another name around here. I have some Malathion, but I ain't used it, although it is a close thing... !!

You can order 1/2 and 1oz vials of floramite on ebay... I got one a few months ago to keep around "just incase"

Thanks! I hit em hard with some Pyrethrin water soluble and misted them bastards down.

Now I kilt me some fungus gnats with the dunks! And I think I got a handle on the durn mites with the Pyrethrin.

The Pyrethrin was a food applicable spray says can be used up to 1 day before eating, so I will wait 5 days and hit it again, try to break the cycle of bugs. Any advice appreciated..

Them dunks are awesome. By sprinkling a teaspoon or less of dry dunk on top of each pot the gnats were gone in about one month without any other methods being used on them.

Update

Just checking back in with an update for everyone. :joint:

I ended up breaking up 1/4 of a dunk into 2 gallons of distilled water, let it sit overnight, and just flushed with the stuff. I was due for a flush at the time anyway since I had been feeding consistently for 2 weeks.

Within a day I started to notice fewer adults and now I haven’t seen any for at least 2 weeks. I was planning on following up by crushing the dunks and putting them on top of the soil, but they died so fast it wasn’t necessary. The dunks didnt have any negative impact on the plants and they seem to be doing even better after the flush itself.

I can’t confirm it killed the larva too, but I am assuming no more adult gnats = no more babies. Hoping they have a fairly short life span.

I would strongly recommend these for anyone who is having issues with gnats.

Sprinkle a little around the tops of your pots. They are likely to come back. Sneaky devils!

If you're using chem nutes, you can also add in H2O2 for another preventative measure. It'll kill any larvae that might still be in the coco, but it seems like you got it under control.

thanks for the peroxide tip. I did not know that. I guess about 1 tablespoon per gallon of nutes?

Kills them devils huh? good news. They can't die fast enough to suit me.

I use up to 3 tsp's with no negative effects whatsoever, or any that can be seen. Can't guarantee it'll get rid of the bastards if you have lots of flying adults, but it'll definitely slow them down.

Stoney: I thought I'd pass on what I learned about the dunks and killing the larvae in the medium.

From what I read, the larvae ingest the dunk goodies and say Yum, yum.

Then it binds their little intestines up and they can't shit or eat and die a slow, slow death!:muahaha:

I run 50 gallon res' and put a half a dunk in every time i fill it. About once a week. It pretty much eradicated all signs of the gnats. I would occasionally see one flying around the house. Then i got comfortable and did not put dunks in for two consecutive reservoir changes. They came back with a vengeance. Pissed Off and in numbers! I went and picked up a pack today and will continue using them now...forever? :noway:

Rez, I don't see how you could recommend using Forbid. It is not approved for use on edibles, only ornamentals.
However, I am very interested in another Bayer product called Admire Pro.
I have both root aphids and spider mites and am hoping to kill these fuckers with it. I am also using Mycotrol and Azatrol.

Overkill is under-rated.

I've heard rubbing alcohol (both straight and diluted) works well, dries out the larvae and doesn't harm plants, I would do more research on dosing though.

Crippled1....I have used Forbid for spider mites....ONE shot is all it takes and they are gone! The active ingredient in Forbid is spiromesifen. This product is also marketed under another name by Bayer. It is called Oberon. Oberon is approved for use on Cotton, corn, ornamentals, pome fruits, strawberries and vegetables. Forbid is the SAME thing, thus it is safe for food crops. I had a mite problem for years. One drenching with forbid and I haven't seen any since. It has been 2 years now.
