150w HPS vs. 2 100w CFLs?

Spent 2 hours trying to figure this out seems hard to find a good battle or comparison. Can anyone hemp me out with this one?

Although I haven't used a 150w, I have used a 250w, which is somewhat close. I would say if your cooling is all good, you will have better results with the hps, since the penetration would be deeper, and the intensity would be greater. Best of luck with whatever you choose:joint:

The HPS will blow the CFL out of the water if you know how to handle the heat (vent the hood, glass)

I have entirely CFL's in my veg cab for budget and ventilation related reasons. Let me tell you, everything grows excruciatingly slow. Not to mention if you flower all the way through with CFLs don't even try to expect the same gram p/ watt ratio.

A buddy of mine has T-5s and an MH, we both started similar cuts from the same mother and his were 2-3 times the size of mine after a month. It really shook my faith in CFLs. They're great where heat is an issue and they're excellent for maintaining plants. But if you want to see some real inch a day growth, I've only had that happen under H.I.D. lighting.

My next order of business is getting a 150w MH into my veg chamber, cool tube style, hopefully I can handle the heat. Ideally I'd like two. We'll see what happens. They're dirt cheap after saving up for a nice 1000w and all the other big shit.

I've got both a 150w HPS and 110w of T5's running in my room. The 110w of fluorescent fills in under the canopy nicely.

ALOT more..... I have plenty of cfl's and you can touch those as much as you want... but with my 150hps.. when its been on for a couple of hours it is very hot.. I touched it with the top of my hand by mistake while tieing down a top and it gave me a nice burn that was with me for 2 weeks...

Not to mention that its like lookin into the sun with HID's..

re: two 100 watt CFL's....are you speaking of the 23 watters that are equivalent to 100 watt tungsten bulbs? If so, you need to use the 23 watt x 2, which isn't going to even come close to a 150 watt HID.

I'm sure he means the big horticulture CFL's that come in 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300. They huge and are definitely 100 actual watts, not equivalent incandescent watts. I doubt he'd consider comparing anything different. The upside on those CFL's are you got very dense growth with lots of internodes. Can't match speed though.

the 150 hps is better use of your money if heat isnt an issue , u just get more lumens for your dollar. u can get a hps like your looking for, for around 85 shipped if u live in the states, u could pick up 150 watts in cfls in say 4 50 watt bulbs and with simple attactments like clamp ons youd spend like 35 bucks at any lowes or home depot. if heats n issue go with the cfls..

I agree with ya, you are most likely correct....although I have seen that mistake made before.

Get the HPS. I went from a 4 lamp T-5 /w 105 watt CFL to a 150 HPS with two 23 watt CFL's recently and I can already see the difference.

Like previously mentioned, it depends on your square footage for heat related issues...anything under 8 sq feet, it was recommended to go with CFL...and above 8sf with HID

What's your SF?

How to calculate square footage for your surface area
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First: Measure the width (side to side) of the inside of your cab in inches.
Example: Width = 14"
Second: Measure the depth (front to back) of the inside
Example: Depth = 14"
Third: Multiply the width (in inches) by the depth (in inches)
Example: 14 x 14 = 169
Fourth: Divide the above answer by 144 to get square footage
Example: 169 / 144 = 1.17361 rounded to the nearest hundredth is 1.17 sq ft.

if you ad a little cooltube to your set, the 150hps will beat 200w cfl. but you're gonna need more ventilation with the hps.

Don't forget Sodiums and the like will stick out much more than cfl's when it comes to thermal imaging! even venting the heat will come out somewhere, this is how they got me back in '06.

Incidentally, I now grow under the rays of the sun... pick up that heat source you bastards!!!

Peace to all of you, my brothers and sisters...
