70w HPS ?'s

Ive tried searching hasnt show me anyting yet, but I also suck at searching.\

How can I wire up a 70w HPS security light to grow in my cab?

Is a 'remote ballast' just a ballast that is outside the cab? if so can that be achieved by just making the wires connecting the socket to the ballast longer?

any info would be helpful for me!

Thanks,
Jetta

Got another question.

My 70w lamp has an indent on the very tip of it that holds an internal piece. When hung vertically, the indent creates a shadow.

My question is do all HID lamps have this indent? Should I just hang it horizontally?

thanks for your responses in advance.

I think there should be some sort of indication on the bulb or ballast indicating what orientations it can be run? I know that some aren't suitable for horizontal and vertical. That's just what I've read.

I looked on a 600 hps and it's perfectly domed glass, except it has a metal clip sort of thing inside the glass, which would cast a shadow of sorts, I guess.

Hi,
HPS are universal so you can hang vertical or horizontal.

I just converted a 70 watt hps and it's pretty simple. No igniter at that wattage.

Ya, you're correct...you just want to extend the wires to the socket. There sould be a wiring diagram on top of the ballast. The wires to connect to the power cord should be black (hot) and white(neutral) Capacitor should already have been wired up.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

V indicates vertical. U indicates universal (either way). No indication, probably universal.

Your ballast needs a metal container to mount it in/on. It doesn't have to be enclosed. You also need to run a multi-strand, insulated copper wire from the ballast housing to the reflector, extending the ground throughout the entire circuit.

Hanging the bulb vertically increases the footprint and allows you to put more plants around the bulb. This setup works best with a square footprint as the light dispersal is as broad as it is long.

A horizontal setup works best with a rectangular footprint as the bulb throws more width than length. If you go horizontal, keep the element parallel with the short wall of the cab, tent, whatever.

All HIDs throw a black spot forward. As Disco states, lamps throw light to the sides and precious little, if any, forward or back. Used vertically, that's not a problem as there are no plants directly underneath. Used horizontally, hang lamp perpendicular to the long side of the garden. This allows a larger footprint at a lower height.

i never used a copper wire from ballast to reflector..only from ballast to the ballast housing. when you take apart a unit like this there is not a ground wire going from ballast to reflector...none that i seen.! ? and i always keep the ballast in the unit it came in and make that the main housing for the ballast..longer wires are connected in the ballast/housing unit and 1 cord goes out to the reflector/socket and 1 cord goes out to be plugged in the wall.

I guess my real question regarding the indent of glass on the tip is: If I hang it vertically will that shadow decrease the lumens given to my plants?

it wont be a vscrog tho... This will be my first real go at growing and Im going to try a regular SOG and see how it works. I'd try a scrog but I am growing from seed.

I'm not sure you'd get any benefit from a vertical bulb if the plants weren't arranged to make benefit of it. If that's what you meant.
