Proof that your pots aren't tall enough

I think this is why our soils grows are always dwarfed by the same strain in hydro. Taproot depth determines final plant size, no doubt in my mind. At day 19, my JEMs have sent taproots out TWICE the size of their 1.5 gallon pots. Wow.

:puppydoge our plants need taller pots :puppydoge

A nice trick is to pull the plant out and *CAREFULLY* coil the taproot. Sort of like LSTing but underground. I learned this from growing succulents with preposterously long taproots.

I do the same thing and it works good for me.

I always use tall rather than wide pots, not sure I can tell a difference, but I still do it.

It was discovered maybe 2 years ago or more by a dude on hg 420 .com I think...might have been Overgrow or Planetganja, I forget...that taller pots were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more important than simply bigger pots. As was starting autos in big pots and not potting up like normal.

The problem is that tall pots are not very common.

Since I had a hard time finding tall pots I just concentrated on growing autos that didn't give a sh*t about vertical rootspace. Auto AK47 for example is far less sensitive to root restrictions than Auto Blueberry or Auto Lemon Skunk.

LowLife' as yet unreleased "Giant Purple Auto" (6ft tall) also couldn't care less about it's roots being restricted.

Here's a pic: 6ft tall in a 5l pot (next time I'll plant directly into the ground)

Now I agree that tall pots are better than just bigger pots but as autos are being developed, they are behaving more normally (apart from the autoflowering bit)

Here's one of my creations (3ft tall Giant Auto Matanuskathunderfuck in 10l pot) I started her in a 5l pot which quickly became far too small, potted her up and she didn't bat an eyelid.

It doesn't look like a taproot to me. To me it looks like a subsidiary root.

ya, not a the main tap root. also KC your one major problem, holes in the bottom instead of the sides. Major air restrictions and drainage problems.:yoinks:

next time cut your holes in the sides at the bottom.

your so called Auto Purple, and AUTO MTF, PLEASE ,, lets see some dates on those plants, how many days did they take? why so vague on the details?? And do they AF Indoors under 24 hours of light? Oh and thanks for the LowLife Plug and :hijacked:

i culled my largest auto male at day 30, stood about 2+ tall and the tap root was maybe a little past half way to the bottom of my 1.5 gallon grow bag full of coco 75percent, dirt 25. im not sure im sold on this theory that autos have absolutely huge in terms of deep tap roots, not buying it yet.

"LowLife' as yet unreleased "Giant Purple Auto"

Sounds interesting........ Any more info?

I wasn't being purposely vague on the details I swear! I'm no tease! And I didn't mean to plug LowLife seeds, just that I have a good relationship with those guys, we work closely together and I feel that our combined genetics are absolutely second to none!

Just check out the pics and tell me it ain't so!

Ok, so you want info...let me just warn you that I am NOT someone you want to trust with keeping detailed records but at least I date my pictures!

The "Giant Purple Auto" (LowLife Seeds)

Don't know the genetics, LowLife sent me a few beans just as a taster. He didn't even tell me how tall they'd get so I planted them in 5l pots which very very quickly became far too small but I didn't pot them up as by that time they were in active flower.

That picture is the 17th May 2008 and she was probably 40-45 days old (ish) I didn't get any males and LowLife is as yet unwilling to send me anymore. There's no release date scheduled for them as I believe some problems/inconsistencies need to be ironed out first.

She grew very very fast from seed, straight up with no branching whatsoever (like Moroccan plants) She reached 2 feet in 2 weeks, showed sex and continued to reach for the sky until she reached 6ft! She was basically one main cola on a stem with golfball buds going all the way down. The leaves were big, quite wide and indica looking and her buds were very "hashy" smelling. She smoked a little harshly but had really good potency.

My "Giant Auto Matanuskathunderfuck" was grown earlier this year, she's probably 65-70 days old in that pic and she bulked up and I think she finished at about 100 days. I originally bought some MTFxLR F1 (highbred seeds) beans from Dr Chronic some years ago and after a few generations of inbreeding I've got 2 seperate lines, a standard Auto MTF and this giant one. The standard one takes 65-70 days and this giant one takes about 90 days but I pollenated her so had to wait a bit longer for the seeds to mature.

They show sex like a standard auto at about day 14 but continued to stretch whilst pistils were sprouting everywhere, she finished at about 3ft tall and yielded over 3oz dry (in a 10l pot)

Sorry to the threadstarter for hijacking his thread, I won't do it again!

Lastly, a pic of an autoflowering sativa from LowLife. Again a few tester beans were given to me early last year, 2 sprouted, both were female and then one got eaten by my dog.

The remaining female was quite, quite amazing!

You'll have to trust me that she was very pretty because that's a bloody awful picture! She looks and smells like a landrace sativa (Thai/Indian) but she autoflowered just like any other auto (day 14ish)

She was grown in a 10l pot and finished at about 3.5-4ft tall and was loaded with typically wispy sativa buds. She wasn't amazingly potent, she was just like a normal landrace sativa, the only difference is that she autoflowered!

I actually dusted her with a dab of Auto AK47 pollen (all I had at the time) and I'm growing one female this year which as you'd expect, is similar to the mother but also different. When she fills in a bit I'll upload some pics.

Again, apologies to krazycure for hijacking his thread, I'm fairly new to posting on icmag (although I've been a member for a while) and I haven't set up my own thread yet.

Edit: I don't use 24/0 indoors, I use 20/4 or 18/6 depending on what I'm doing/growing. These autos might only have spent the first 30 days of their lives under HPS before being moved to the great outdoors or conservatory.

that's a crazy pretty sat right there, I love a good sativa.

pretty cool it's an auto, when you said 90 you meant 90 from seed to harvest?

Great find ChronJon!!! Thanks for the hook-up bro!!!

no problem! knew it'd be helpful to people out there looking for tall pots =)
I like the idea of using soda bottles or milk cartons but these pots and the trays that are made for them are just so perfect.

And P.S. to Ch@ppers.. i can't fuckin wait for that lowlife giant purple to come out! I saw in Skunk mag that they're comin out with a regular purple auto too but it's taking a while because a rat ate all the testing plants.. one survived with seeds so I guess it's just taking a while to build up the seed stock.. maybe it was the same strain you have and were referring to idk but still i can't wait! start up a thread when you grow out more of that or your own autos those look awesome and i don't want the hijacking to continue lol.
