Leaf damage

What causes this leaf damage. It's very common in outdoor grow reports. I have it on all of my outdoor plants. Any ideas?

iy you looks with a mignifying glass, youll see tiny 1/16 inch pests. its thrips aka the borg!
use sevin spray before flower but nothing once they start flowering. spray every few days until the stretch starts and it will greatly increase your yield. the little buggers do a lot of damage

Heh. I thought spider mites were the borg. Anyway as from what I've read and seen around here this doesn't look like thrips damage which looks more like this(from "the complete guide" and "thrips 101"):

So ... I don't think those are thrips. Any other suggestions?
