they are right, I have tryed both 24 and 18/6 and those 6 hrs make root groth. In the long run will make bigger better (healthy) plants!

Someone here on icmag posted the results of a study that was done regarding this. They found that 20/4 resulted in the healthiest, most vigorous plants in a side-by-side comparison. This study went all the way through to final yield. So, something to think about.

I have mine on 24 hours right now because I need to pick up another time. They're not complaining, no problems with temps.

dark cycle is needed for the best results, I use 18/6 because I am a poor ass and it saves me some money on the electric bill, but 20/4 works well too.

Mother nature doesn't grow pot with 24 hour light, why should we?

i agree with that.use 18/6 go for root growth first then worry about the rest when needed.

another vote for 18/6. The clones root no problem under that schedule, and it allows u to have 6 hottest hours of the day to keeps the lights off. With 24/0 + MH veg spectrum my plants were way to short. The 6 hours of darkness allows them the perfect stretch for the moms to give clones.

:yeahthats

like others said six hours of dark seems a lil much to me for vegging, but so does no dark at all... so i stick to the 20/4 as recommended by the afore-mentioned 'study' and my plants have always seemed to like it

20/4 is where it's at. :joint:

We did a lot of experiments with light times a few years back using known sat and sat dom clone lines.

With Vegging ie under hid lights.

20/4 produced the most sturdy growth and the most bulk. Best final yield, taken as 100%.
22/2 Less of both. yield 88%
18/6 Studier than 22/2 but slightly less bulk. yield 87%
24/0 Much lighter in all aspects than 18/6. Yield 79%
16/8 The weediest plants. yield 67%

snip

For the mum lines we have 20/4 to 12/12 gives the best crop weight and bud quality, really thats all I’m interested in.

Does it confuse the plants if you change the cycle later on in development?
For example, my current plants are about 7 weeks old and have been on 24 hours since germination. They are looking very leafy and healthy, but they are also very stocky, probably only 7 inches tall. I'm thinking I should reduce the cycle now for the later stages of vegging to encourage some more growth, probably 20/4 - is this gonna be OK after all this time or should I have done it sooner?
