Stem culture

I could be wrong, I was talkin to a friend and he was tellin me about a method of keeping a strain by taking a small portion of the stem of the mother or strain u want to keep and putting it in some sort of a culture, keeping it so it can grow roots and to later produce clones, this eliminates the need of a mother plant, u can just keep a portion of a stem to save that strain. Another friend that took a horticulture class told me the same thing. I know nothing about this and I would really apreciate all help, feedback, and all further knowlege on this subject.

Its called tissue culture. It requires the most sterile conditions possible. Very difficult to make work with cannabis. In fact I've only seen one picture on the whole internet ever that looked like the plant was gonna make it.

Thanks man I was just curious and thought I'd post to see what others thought about it. I knew it was pretty rare or must take some experience and skill in that subject

No prob. I was real curious about it too. My GF did some culture work in college and thought it would be a matter of just trying it with cannabis. Not so! I got all the gear! just no time to try and be the first in history to make it work. lol Cool stuff though! peace

Tissue culture isn't difficult, it's just takes a rather methodical approach. Anyone that can handle repairing a car, walking while chewing gum or watch broadcast tv can handle tissue culture. You can even buy "starter kits" designed for educators for a few hundred at most. It's not well suited for "storing" genetics, but it's very well suited for massive reproduction of the same genetics. A single small plant can be turned into several thousand via tissue culture. Very few growers wake up and say "gosh, I've got a tiny plant, but i need 40,000 clones in the next 8 weeks". It's just easier and cheaper to take cuttings. That being said, some laboratories do use tissue culture to maintain a library of plant genetics, but longterm storage is substantially more difficult than just propagation. The only places I've seen it used commercially is in the propogation of flowers that were difficult to take conventional cuttings of or breed for seed and in forestry, for mass preparation of tree seedlings. I know it's probably used in other fields, but those are the only two I've known it used in personally.

Oh and yes, you can do it very cheaply in a DIY setup, but there's quite a bit entailed in that compared to purchasing a ready made kit.

For the record, it'll work just fine with cannabis.

Thanks geo that's some good info I'm gunna look futher into the kits ur talkin about seems interesting I always want to learn new ways of dublicating a strain other than cloning. Yea I'm sure if I got the right info and research on tissue culture I'm sure I could figure it out, thanks for ur Info and help with this

I bought a couple of the kits. they are pretty complete. i was able to reproduce orange trees, roses, and a couple of other plants from the yard but never got any where with cannabis. the mix in the kit is wrong for it I think. I was able to keep them sterile enough not to get crazy mold but they would just keep producing callus and no plantlets. never got to the rooting phase. I think alot of tinkering with different nutrients and chemical ratios was needed. It was beyond my scope. There are a few threads here that go into pretty good detail about the whole process.

Thanks resin, I can see y it's not the best method, it takes more time and more of a perfect ideal environment

Phytotechnology Laboratories were where i use to source my materials, I have no idea if they're still in business. I know they only used to do business with researchers.

a year or so ago there was talk about soma releasing tissue cultures of his primo clones/mothers/fathers just like his seeds but here we are and still no tissue cultures.

Does anyone know how this procedure works, I know how cloning works I was wondering how much tissue does it take to create a certain about of reproduction, or how the tissue is turned into a cutting wit roots

I would suggest reading all of the information on the kitchenculture site. It's pretty self-explanatory and straightforward. :D

ive read some stuff about it too - is it actually possible to freeze those cultures for use in the future? i think ive read that it is possible but im not quite sure

And if anybody has had success with this this tecnique and cannabis, PLEASE, PLEASE, post a pic. PLEASE. I've only seen 1 picture of a teeny tiny plantlet growing from a callus! I would love to see a plantlet that produced roots and survived. Or multiple plantlets on a single callus.
